(More customer reviews)I'm mid-range desktop comparison shopping and Gateway's DX series is close to the winner's circle. It meets almost all checklist requirements with Intel's new 2nd generation Core processor, ample DDR3 memory, wireless, large HD, an HD expansion bay, PCI-E expansion slots (3), VGA and HDMI ports. The nifty case even has relatively rare external access to an HD bay apparently. Gateway's web site doesn't seem to describe this feature, but there is a picture of it in the DX gallery for those who understand what they are viewing (others may wonder why there is an HD in the front optical drive slot). All this adds up to adequate future proofing at an attractive price.
Gateway, you are soooo close to a great configuration, with one exception - the USB ports. There are 10, as ample as any brand, but all are USB 2.0 and none are the new USB 3.0 which is theoretically 5x faster and does transfer data 2x to 2.5x faster in the real world. Other brands are starting to offer USB 3.0. This feature is important to anyone copying a big music library (300GB) to an external USB harddrive. USB 3.0 can save hours with big transfers. Also, with quicker transfers the external USB HD doesn't work as long and hard and is that much less exposed to self-generated heat, and heat is the enemy of these drives. Gateway, just swap in a couple of USB 3.0 ports and you have a sale. Until then, I'm waiting impatiently with fingers tapping and thinking of a lofty 5-star rating if USB 3.0 appears.
