(More customer reviews)Just got this a few days ago to complement my Samsung BD and Plasma. Replaced an older Samsung 5disc DVD HT, so used the Samsung speakers from it. Sound is good, no problems with video, either from the BD with a DVD being upconverted, a HD Tivo hooked up - tried all resolutions from Tivo, PC via HDMI, and video/audio via Iphone all played/looked/sounded great. Took a while to get used to the interface (-1 star), an on-TV screen menu would have been nice (if there is one, have not come across it - and my older DVD HT system had one).
Having the same issue with the remotes looking too similiar, as another reviewer pointed out - although that's not a flaw with the product, more myself. Although all hooked through Anynet makes life easier.
The automatic sound calibration (ASC) was a nice feature during set up - very simple to calibrate the speaker levels, just push a button and wait.
To clarify another reviewer comment (perhaps Amazon changed the photo since then) the HW-C500 has twist style connectors, that also accept a banana connector as well.

Toshiba 32CV100U 32-Inch 720p LCD/DVD Combo TV (Black Gloss) Review

(More customer reviews)I was wary of getting a Toshiba for a TV, since it seems they're not a high seller. But I wasn't pleasantly surprised with the features on this TV. If my math is correct, you're essentially paying an extra $100 for the convenience of having the DVD player built in to the TV, which is not a bad deal if need that.
To sum it up, this is a good LCD high-def TV with some surprisingly nice added features. I noticed that whiter flesh tones appeared a little too red and couldn't seem to correct this with the color adjustments, but that was the only downside.
We bought this TV for our kids' play room and wanted the convenience of the built-in player, so as to eliminate all the cords dangling from the TV.
Details....
DVD - it's important to remember this is a DVD player, and NOT Blu-ray. However, if you're like us, you already have a large DVD collection for your kids, so it's not really a waste.
I was surprised at the quality of the DVD player, which seemed to upscale nicely. (DVD's are formatted for older, standard definition televisions, so the image has to be converted to HD, which has more pixels (dots) to display.)
Blu-ray: I did not test out any features for playing back blu-ray discs, so if you really care about this you should read the manual of maybe other reviews. What I've learned so far on another HDTV is that you'll want control over "judder", which allows you to choose a setting that makes scenes with motion clearer. I'm not sure this Toshiba has those settings, so you may be stuck with what you get. Check the manual.
Power-up and Getting Started: this TV does seem to take a bit longer to power up, I think because it has to check the DVD player first, which slows things down. The getting started guide was great and easy to follow.
I did have one bug - I'm using broadcast HD. That's right, television stations are now broadcasting HD signals for free. Of course, it's not at all close to the number of cable channels, but who cares - it's free! And it's HD.
So you have to tell the TV at setup time what system you're running - and for some reason I couldn't really pick the Antenna setting. However, after the first setup, I simply followed the instructions for re-scanning channels for antenna, and it all worked fine.
Antenna usage - this TV has some great antenna features - it will show you signal strength for each channel. Very nice.
Picture Quality - very good. Again, the only problem I noticed was flesh tones turned out too pink or too red on some channels. I played with all of the color settings but couldn't quite get it right. Movies seemed to be fine.
I did not watch any Blu-ray movies on this, since I had no blu-ray device connected, but DVD movies and broadcast channels looked great. 32 inches is actually a small size for HD TV's, and you'll notice this for a lot of channels, since they still broadcast in the old standard.
KQED here in the Bay Area looks fantastic on this thing (they broadcast often in 1080i, which is very good).
Audio - the sound is good, but not great. Still, you'll be able to understand dialog in movies, so I think it's good enough. In most TV's now, it seems, they don't put the speakers pointing out towards the user, they point down, which is simply never going to sound as good as direct sound.
Other - the TV is small and light and mounted easily to a TV mount I bought off of Amazon. There are a few standard sizes used in standard mounts, and the screws fit right in.
All in all, Toshiba did a very good job with this TV.

Sony Bravia EX700 Series 60-Inch LCD with LED back-lighting HDTV (KDL-60EX700) Review

(More customer reviews)I got my 60ex700 yesterday and I am really happy with it. It is a great TV. There was a little flashlighting and uniformity is not perfect but it seems you can tune it quite a bit. There are an amazing amount of settings and I have it set to be more than acceptable for me. Great price on a great TV. Contrast is great with deep blacks and white whites. The motionflow is great also.
Furthermore, the sound is acceptable for normal viewing and much better than I expected due to all the people dissing it. I have a nice theater 5.1 setup but I don't want to use that for everything and the sony sound is just fine.
Netflix and internet stuff is great, the remote is fine. This technology is getting so good we are really picking nits at this point. I just hope it is engineered to be reliable and long lasting because I intend on having this in my living room for the next 6-10 years.
I am sure you can spend a lot more and buy a better TV with better picture quality but for this price... killer TV.
The only downside is the TV is so damn thin and light that I feel nervous holding the bezel when I have to put in the inputs. It is solidly built but it just looks so fragile.

(More customer reviews)This is an excellent TV. You can read a lot of positive reviews about the EX500-32 on Amazon that will give you sufficient detail about the Sony Bravia EX's. Start with those reviews and note the differences between the 500 and 700 are:
- Video Processing : BRAVIA Engine 3(tm) Technology:
Many of the LCD tv companies share the production of various parts, including the screen. One of the major differences between the brands is the software that drives it. The EX 700 has the Bravia Engine 3 driving it. The EX500 and lower have the Bravia Engine 2. The Sony rep told me that Sony makes 90+% of the digital cameras and equipment so they have the software advantage when it comes to interpreting those inputs to get the output (the tv). Take this for what it's worth coming from a rep, but it's something to consider when comparing TV brands. With the Bravia 3 engine you know you have the latest available.
- The EX700 has a motion sensor (Presence Sensor) that turns off the TV when nobody is in the room. I think this is important because heat can damage your tv. If you accidentally leave it on your risk of damage is lessened by the auto-off. Also, this will save some $ in energy bills.
- The EX700 has Motionflow 120Hz Technology for Smooth Motion, the EX 500 does also. The EX400 does not.

Toshiba DR430 DVD Player - Black Review

(More customer reviews)Bought this DVR to enable me to transfer VCR tapes to DV. Although the manual does not specifically tell you how, it is really easy to figure it out. Play the VCR using AV cables into the front of the DVR and hit record. That is how easy it was. You do have to change the input to Front with the menu button. I have made many DV's with no problem and happy with it. I have also recorded TV shows directly from the Direct TV box via the S Video jack and the quality is superb!

Samsung HT-AS730ST Home Theater System Review

(More customer reviews)Sorry, this is going to be a book.... If I could give this review a MINUS five stars I would. I ordered this unit as I have a LOT of other Samsung products (two flatscreens, Blueray player, monitors, washer/dryer, etc.) and have previously been happy with their products. I wish some of the other reviews had been posted when I ordered, I would have run far and fast.
First, I get the unit, what a nightmare to install, instructions are vague, and non-existent in certain areas, as others have stated, the setup procedure is flawed and isn't all in the manual to begin with. After numerous calls to tech support (in India, I assume from the accents and lack of understanding) I finally got sound out of the unit when watching cable (I had successfully figured out the Blue Ray player and my DVD recorder).
Second, the input choices and radio station presets don't stay when you power down.... I hope you enjoy or get darn good at programming that thing every time you turn it off. It takes three or four pushes and choices to get the sound working again from the cable box. The display is also dim, so if you are at all visually challenged, hang it up, put the glasses on and get real close to see what you are doing. I had this silly notion that because it was a Samsung unit, it would have onscreen display with the TV, shoot, my SONY DVD recorder does....
Third, when I ordered the unit, the Samsung website said under "specifications" that is was "wireless ready-yes" and "wireless module included-yes", well, they LIED, no wireless module in the box. I called them on this and they would supposedly send me a wireless module.... that was back in mid-May and now, over halfway through June, I get a call today that "forget it, we are out of stock on wireless modules and tough cookies, no refunds, no compensation, just tough". Oh, by the way, they changed their website now, but I have printed copies and screenshots of the website stating the wireless module was included.
Fourth, I got the unit May 13th, took me a couple days to install it and it quit working on May 19th, even with the unit completely powered off, the subwoofer had a large amount of feedback hum coming through it. Called Technical service and they said send back the amplifier and the subwoofer, keep all the rest of the stuff there and they would repair it. It takes the slow boat to Samsung in NJ, and they finally receive it on May 28th... according to UPS, because Samsung can't find it, doesn't know where it is, and isn't fixing it. After numerous calls and emails, all of which have to be initiated by me, they decide they will send me out a new unit, this is as of June 9th. I am told I will hear from Customer Executive Service within 48 hours as to what the status is. I call again on June 15th to find out what the heck... only to hear they are holding the new unit hostage until I send back their stupid speakers and remote control THEY told me not to put in the box when I sent the amp and sub back. After umpteen calls to their service, which they won't give you a supervisor, they tell me as soon as UPS shows the box in their system coming back, they will ship the new unit. Today (June 18th), after UPS shows the item in transit, they now state they won't ship the new unit until they get the old parts!!!!! Oh how I love being lied to and held hostage!
I am so sorry I spent my money on another Samsung product, I can't express how amazed I am at their utter lack of professionalism and concern for their customer. Their idea of "customer service" is to have some lackey on the phone going "I'm sorry sir, yes, that isn't right, but there is nothing I can do about it, and no, I can't transfer you to my supervisor...." So, before you spend your hard earned cash, save yourself some grief and go buy another brand, any brand, doesn't matter, can't be as bad as these folks.

Yamaha YHT-693BL 5.1 Channel 525 Watt HTiB System (Each, Black) Review

(More customer reviews)As someone who previously did not consider themselves an audiophile, I am very happy to find that my lack of caring about audio was simply because I'd never had a good sound system before.
You see, this is my first surround sound system, and I'm now converted for life.
Installing this system was pretty straightforward but each component had its own instruction set which made things slightly confusing and hard to keep track of. Going methodically kept everything clear, but for someone used to breezing through electronics setup, this took a painfully long time. In the end, I was able to successfully install the system on my own, having never installed a surround system before, and without any errors.
The sound on this system is outstanding, and the volume level is very nice. I have been listening to music, blu-rays, and video games for a couple months now on this system and everything is clear, beautiful, and aurally compelling. The receiver has lots of great options for customizing your sound to your own preferences and is quite straightforward to use.
The build quality of all the components feels very solid and high quality. Nothing feels cheap or skimpy and I was pleasantly surprised to find out just how hefty the speakers are. The front speakers are actually quite large, and the rear speakers are of decent size as well. This is not meant to scare anyone off that is concerned about massive speakers, but mearly to point out that they're not some tiny speakers that you're afraid you'll blow out on the next Michael Bay movie but are instead nice and solid and capable of outputting big sound. The receiver is capable of turning your stereo mp3 (or other format) audio files into an excellent full surround by using a number of output options, most notably the 7-channel surround which will send the audio to the rear speakers as well.
One thing I read in other reviews was that the screen on the receiver was "too small" and hard to read. This is not the case. The folks who have issues seeing the display must be hard-of-sight, because if the display was any larger it would be obtrusive and ugly. From my couch I can read the display just fine and once you get your system set up, there is little need to read the display anyways.
The remote control is quite complicated and a mass of buttons, but once you read through some of the documentation to figure out what everything does, it is very straightforward and very powerful. The only thing it cannot do is turn on my Playstation because it is not a bluetooth remote (but almost no remotes are). It remembers settings based upon which input you're set to and this is very useful!
Unlike most HTIB systems, the Receiver that comes in this system seems extremely good and looks like it would be well worth keeping while upgrading other components of the system to high-end pieces (if one feels inclined to upgrade to expensive equipment). I can't really fathom what a more expensive receiver would provide that this one does not, unless you are running some extremely complicated setup or have an actual theatre installed in your house or something. Comparing this receiver to my brother's HTIB limited-option cruddy one, I am very please with the power output, quality, and feature set of this receiver. The large amounts of inputs also ensures that you are highly unlikely to run out of places to plug in your electronics. I have more things plugged into this than most people probably will and I still have room for more.
Overall, for extreme audiophiles who complain about this little thing or that little thing on this system, to you I say "why are you down in the lower price range equipment anyways?" For the rest of us, this system is awesome and I highly recommend it. If you're using your TV speakers, or little 1.5" speakers that come in most HTIB systems... it's time for an upgrade to this excellent system.
Lastly, the speakers are all equipped properly for wall installation. I had much more difficulty with the installation of the wall mounts that I purchased than I did with the installation of the speakers themselves. I was initially concerned that a HTIB system might have some non-standard installation components/mounts but luckily that wasn't the case, and everything in this sytem appears to be forward thinking in terms of usability with other equipment and/or upgrading components piece by piece down the line.

Great picture using digital cable (not HD), regular ant/cable connection with coax cable and digital cable adapter. Good sound, good volume, good value for price. Viewing is best when TV is slightly lower than eye level to minimize any darkness. Very happy with this TV. I also have a 19" Toshiba, so I was already familiar with the various controls and settings.

(More customer reviews)This is probably the cheapest 26 inch LED TV in the market and is definitely value for the money. Very light weight, Picture quality is great for all HD content. TV works good for non HD content but you can see the diff with HD content. Out of box picture setting is too bright. You would need to select either pre-set mode like movie, sports etc or have your own custom settings for picture & sound. Sound works equally fine & can really feel the sound effects. Only con is remote. Need to have better design, buttons & responsiveness but it's good enough not to cause any disappointment.

Philips HTS5100B/F7 Blu-ray 7.1 channel Home Theater system Review

(More customer reviews)Recently purchased the Philips HTS5100B/F7 Blu-Ray home theater system. It is quick to setup. The sound quality is pretty good, and for a small apartment this is an excellent system. The bass is strong but slightly boomy at high volumes, but I didn't need to go to that high of volumes to really enjoy the blu-ray i put in (the Dark Knight). This system is best for playing movies, music was OK as well but the strength is definitely within movies.
Limitations:
1) NO USB port, so you cannot plug in a USB drive and play divx or other video files off it. The manual says you cannot play video files from the SD card slot.
2) It is NOT 7.1, only 5.1 and there is no place to plug in any extra speakers
3) Speaker wires have plugins so it will be difficult to extend the speakers, you'd have to clip the wires and add them in the middle
4) Only 1 optical input, so you can only add 1 device this way.
Overall, the MSRP is definitely too high, although on sale prices it's very reasonable if you don't expect 7.1 or a USB port.

Sony BRAVIA BX 300 Series 32-Inch LCD TV, Black Review

(More customer reviews)I tested this TV at an in-store display to determine if it suffers a similar ghosting problem I have with another Sony TV - KDL-26L5000. Sadly it does. I tested with a few pre-recorded scenes known to illustrate the problem on the KDL-26L5000.
The odd ghosting problem is not the typical motion blur noticeable on fast moving objects. This ghosting manifests as a streaking or shadow movement. Most often it seems to affect facial features such as lips and around the eyes which seem to float off people's faces as they move from side to side. The effect is dependent on the scene being viewed - lighting, motion etc - typically occurring in dark scenes or scenes with areas of highly contrasting light and dark areas.
Happily the KDL-32EX400 does not suffer from this problem. If you consider yourself a critical TV viewer, consider spending a little more to avoid this sort of annoying problem. For casual viewing this is probably not an issue.
