Press Setup on remote control to access the setup page, 2.Enter 9210 on the remote 3.A service menu will pop up, 4. Select a region: 0- 6 in region code. 0 is all-region. Press Setup on remote again to exit. It should play all region and PAL discs. Hope that helps.

I've been using this player for a year now and I still LOVE it. My friend gave me a DVD with several movies in AVI and an XVid formats. Typically, I would have to watch these movies on my PC. I was pretty psyched to find that Oppo will play the files. When I popped in the disc, I see a blue menu with all the files. The player decodes each selected file and it had no problem playing 3 out of the 4 AVI files. For some reason, one of the AVI files won't play. The XVid file played fine. The quality of these compressed AVI files, as you can imagine, isn't great. But depending on the source of the AVI file, the output quality to a 46" HDTV is almost as good as a DVD and much better than VCD or VCR quality.

The DV-981HD is the latest incarnation in Oppo's highly aclaimed line of upconverting DVD players. It offers an HDMI interface (HDMI Specification 1.1), with HD upconversion ouput resolutions of 720p, 1080i, and full 1080p. This is Oppo's most full-featured player yet, and as such, it's not a DVD player for people with regular analogue sets. While the DV-981HD doesn't offer component output, and doesn't output standard or native resolution, it does represent one of the best (if not the best) upconverting DVD players out there, and it's perfect for people with HDTVs up to full 1080p who aren't ready to jump on the HD DVD or Blu-ray bandwagen. In addition to excellent upconversion, the DV-981HD offers playback of a whole host of formats including DVD-Audio, Super Audio CS (SACD), Audio CDs, HDCD, WMA, Kodak Picture CDs, all version of DivX including DivX6, as well as Xvid, .SRT, .SMI, .IDX, and .SUB file formats.
Audio Features The DV-981HD outputs audio in stereo or in 5.1 channel surround, either via HDMI, or through the included 5.1 analogue outputs. Other connections include S-Video out, and digital coaxial and optical audio outs. It features 24-bit, 192 kHz high resolution audio D/A converters, supportsvirtual surround in six settings, and has built-in equalizer, channel trim, and channel delay functions.
Farudgja DCDi Technology Rather than trying to build their own upconversion technology for this machine, the Oppo DV-981HD the DCDi Faruja technology from Genesis Microchips. In addition to upscaling a DVD's native 720x480 interlaced video to 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p, Farudja technology also detects content that has gone through 3:2 pull down to convert film content to NTSC for video, and recreates the original frames by blending the fields back together. It then processes for any edit mistakes and reconstrucs an accurate signal, producing an image free of motion artifacts. The unique DCDi algorithm can also identify moving edges within an image and adjust interpolation at a pixel level to create smooth edges for on-screen objects, eliminating the jaggy edges that commonly result from other upconversion techniques. Farudja processing also uses a proprietary "TruLife Enhancement" technology to identify transitions in the image considered to be details such as skin texture, freckles or hair, and enhance those to bring more detail in an image to life on the screen. This approach avoids image artefacts common with the peaking filter approach used by other systems for detail enhancement. The Farudja system uses temporal filtering for noise reduction, and can achieve 6 to 10 dB of Noise reduction without introducing artefacts or losing sharpness in the image.

Compared with Other Oppo DVD player models At the time of this writing, Oppo also has the DV-970HD upconverting player, and their originalOPD971H model. Of these three models, the DV-981HD is the only that upconverts to full 1080p, the other models offer upconversion to 720p or 1080i only. Both the DV-981HD and the DV-970HD offer Super Audio CD (SACD) playback, the OPDV971H does not. The other major difference to consider is that the DV-981HD and the OPDV971H both use Farudja processing for video upconversion. The DV-970HD uses a different upconversion system that may not be as full featured as the Farudja. For this reason Oppo recommends the DV-981HD, or the OPDV971H for use with larger screen HDTVs 50 inches or greater, while the DV-970HD is only recommended for HDTVs smaller than 50-inches. Oppo recommends the DV-970HD for use with external video processors or scalers, and suggests careful calibration of both the DV-981HD and the OPDV971H when used with DLP HDTVs. Both of these players are good for use with DLP HDTVs, but for the best picture, some setup time is required. For disply with a DVI input on your HDTV, an HDMI-DVI adapter is required with both the DV-981HD and the DV-970HD models.

Vizio VBR120 Blu-Ray Disc Player - Black Review

(More customer reviews)It's frustrating to hear how well this Blu-Ray player works for others, but it's also consoling to realize that I'm not the only one who's experienced problem after problem with it. I won't dwell on the glue issue, since it's been covered well enough by other reviewers. My main complaint is with the seemingly random hardware issues with this model. From day one, powering on the player has always been a crap shoot, and to date I've never been able to turn it on, or eject a disc, using the buttons on the machine itself. Thank goodness for the remote!
Sometimes it will play a disc quickly and without any problems; other times it will click and grind for one to two minutes before getting started. I want to be clear, however, that it's not so much the slowness that bothers me, but rather its inconsistency. Every day is a surprise, because I don't know whether it will turn on and hum smoothly away, or turn on and grind, or simply not turn on at all.
The coup de grâce came tonight, when I settled down to watch an evening film. Picture, but no audio. The user manual, a tome of wisdom, suggested that I either turn up the volume or double-check the mute button. Right. Thanks for the tip. Nor do I have any headphones or external devices plugged in, but the manual doesn't offer any suggestions beyond that.
I plan on returning this unit as soon as possible and exchanging it for something else. My recommendation to potential buyers? It's a great deal if you manage to get one that works as well as the models some of these other folks picked up; but it also seems like quite a few of us have run into a number of similar problems that you may want to avoid by dropping a few more dollars on a different brand.

Magnavox NB500MG1F Blu-Ray DVD Disc Player (Manufacturer Refurbished) Review

(More customer reviews)I can't say that "I like it" (4 stars) or "I love it" (5 stars) but this made in China, refurbished Blu-ray player met my expectations which explains the solid 3 stars, meaning "It's Okay".
As a player, this is an inexpensive, basic, no frills unit that does the job I expected it to do and not a lot more - play Blu-ray, DVDs and audio CDs in the bedroom. Nothing more than simple playback should be expected from it but, so far, it has played everything without a glitch. The picture is steady and crisp and so is the audio. There was no skipping so far and old DVDs that became unplayable on the DVD player that it's replacing can be watched again and play flawlessly.
First, for what the player lacks: Internet access. There is no Ethernet port and there is no WiFi - therefore there will never be Netflix or Pandora streaming or anything that needs a network connection. In addition there is no easy way to upgrade it or, if it's upgradeable, the capability is not documented in the manual.
On the positive side, besides the basic playback, this model does a pretty good job upscaling DVDs and has an SD slot - it supports SD, (miniSD and microSD will need an adapter) and SDHC and it does NOT support miniSDHC or microSDHC cards. You should be able to display JPEG pictures. Another welcome feature is its going into standby mode if no action is taken for a few minutes while displaying the 'menu'.
Available ports include HDMI Out, Audio Out, Component Video Out, Digital Out (coax) and Video Out.
The player came with a small and easy to use remote control (batteries included), a 50-page manual and an RCA component video cable.
I have no complaints about this model. It is, by design, an inexpensive, basic features Blu-ray player. Up until now, it performed as expected.

When it comes to the 'refurbished' aspect of this product, I am not as happy.
The unit that I got was dirty. This is not an exaggeration. It had greasy, visible fingerprints and palm prints all over it and I had to spend quite a while cleaning it up. It was also scratched. The scratches were minor but it was scratched nevertheless. The manual is a stapled Xerox copy of the original but it's readable. I understand that 'refurbished' is a rather fuzzy concept but I've been spoiled by the 'like new', quality of refurbished items I received from Linksys or Logitech. This unit arrived in a far from 'like new' condition.
Related to the not exactly 'like new' quality of this refurbished product, it's worth noting that the original 1 year Maganvox warranty does not apply. Instead, you get a 90-days warranty that "does not apply to the cosmetic appearance" (a quote). In addition, the buyer is expected to pay for shipping.
____________________________________________________I don't know if I should consider myself lucky for receiving a working unit but I can only review the product that I received which, once cleaned and hooked up to the TV worked well. The lack of high-end features is not a disappointment or a surprise and it's compensated by the low price. The apparent lack of support is a concern but, again, this is not an expensive product. The 3 stars are well deserved for what I got but I would not recommend this as a 'buy' to anyone who wants to play it perfectly safe or is shopping for a unit that should last for several years.MARCH 12, 2011 UPDATE:
4 months later, I like it more. It performed flawlessly so far. It was a good buy.

Panasonic DVD-S54K 1080p Upconverting DVD Player Review

But what the Panasonic has going for it is rugged construction, a good remote, quick loading, easy set up and it plays everything (not multi-region though). I bought the S54 to replace my S47 which has given me six years of good service and is still running (the motor is getting tired though). I have tried other brands, including a Philips, which gave me just six months of service. So six years of intense use for this price is excellent (My friend's S47 is still going strong after six years). I watch my quality DVDs on a Denon or Marantz, but like all good DVD players, they can't handle shoddy media. They stick, skip or refuse to load. Which is why I always have a cheap DVD player on hand for less than perfect media. The S54 does that job in style, none of that dreaded 'disc error'. Simply put, this Panasonic range is the AK47 of DVD players. If it had better picture quality it would rate five stars.

Philips BDP3010/F7 Blu-ray Disc Player Review

(More customer reviews)There are several problems with this player that make it something I cannot recommend.
First, this player is quite slow to boot up, you have to wait more than 30 seconds before you can even open the disk tray. This is a minor annoyance.
Second, if you stop and extract a disk before it is finished, the player virtually never remembers where you left off, necessitating a wait through the fbi warnings, previews if there are any, and then a search for where you left off.This is a very big annoyance.
Third, as we have both European and American dvd and blu-ray disks, we wanted to convert it to an international setting. The salesman assured me this was easy, gave me the website to find the code, and I then discovered that it works only for dvd's and is impossible to do for blu-rays. This is beyond an annoyance and infuriated me, as I had already bought multi-zone blu-rays.
That makes this a bad purchase for us.

- a very sleek looking player that loads fast. Compared to the Phillips I bought at a big box store for the same price a year ago, it is greased lightning.
- a functional remote that is comfortable and easy to use.
- a USB port on the front of the player to play .mpg and picture files or to rip music to a flash drive or MP3 player from a CD or DVD.
- easy to navigate controls on the front panel. This is essential for me because my employees, who will not have the instruction manual available, will also be using the machine.
- an HDMI output, as well as the regular RCA type jacks.
- a ton of other features I will not use in my particular application.
Setup was a snap, even without so much as a glance at the instructions. I was even able to do a picture slide show from a flash drive without instructions, it is that intuitive. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars:
- If you want to connect an old school coaxial cable (the one that you screw on - with the little wire in the middle of the cable), you are out of luck
- I don't see any instructions on how to get it to control the volume on my TV (and it does not do it on it's own) even though the remote indicates it has the capability.

Toshiba HD-A30 1080p HD DVD Player Review

(More customer reviews)I didn't buy this from Amazon, but since reviews of the player are scarce, I thought I'd share some thoughts.
A few short months ago I bought the Xbox add-on to try the HD-DVD waters, and have been nothing but impressed, so when my standard DVD player died (my 7th one in 8 years, I'm a very heavy DVD watcher), I decided to invest in a player that will (hopefully) last (I also purchased a 4 year warranty this time).
The player itself is beautiful, both in appearance and on screen (watching on 1080p Samsung LCD). Picture quality of HD-DVD is, as expected, superb, and DVD upscaling is the best I have ever seen (easily destroying my 1 year old Sony).
A very few negatives. Boot times are still a bit slow, it takes about 40 seconds before the HD-DVD logo appears on screen, with another 20 seconds to load the disc, it's around 60 seconds total from power on to actually start watching the disc. Discs also don't resume play, which is odd as it seems to be a feature. If you don't power off the unit and stop a disc, it will resume where you left off, but if you power off the player, it restarts from the beginning, very odd, but Toshiba could easily fix in a firmware update.
All in all I am very, very pleased, the unit feels sold, looks amazing on your shelf and features some of the best video quality I have ever seen. The few, "problems" don't really bother me, but I wanted to mention them as it could turn off some people. Thanks for reading!

Sylvania NB500SL9 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player with HDMI Cable Review

(More customer reviews)Sylvania has produced a real winner in this Blu-Ray player! I hooked it up to a 42inch HDTV using the high speed HDMI cable that came with it (a big plus in itself). I connected the audio to my receiver using the coaxial digital output. I turned it on and waited a bit less than a minute for it to power up. I anxiously inserted my first blu-ray disk. It started playing perfectly a about 30 seconds later. The picture and sound are completely outstanding. This could not have been any easier!
I ran it through it's paces doing various tests (I'm an engineer at heart). Jumping backward and forward between titles was quick and flawless. Pausing and then resuming play was equally flawless. I stopped it and restarted it. It gives you the option to playback from the beginning or to resume where you left off. I chose resume and was very quickly watching it where it left off. Perfect!
Even though it worked perfectly right out of the box, I was curious to check out the menu system. Without even looking at the instructions I found the the setup menu to be very easy and intuitive. I didn't make any changes since the defaults were all what I would have chosen anyway.
Next, I wanted to try playing back a regular DVD. This unit upscales to 1080p. To my surprise, the picture I saw was actually very close to looking like blu-ray! Wow! This is going to make me want to play a lot of my regular DVDs again. Nevertheless, I'm sure I'll always want to watch my favorites using Blu-Ray when I have that option.
Finally, I tried playing back a DVD I recorded myself. Again, it played perfectly with no problem at all. Then, I tried a CD and found it to play perfectly. I also tried a CDROM that has jpeg images on it and that too worked showing the images as a slide show and giving me the ability to choose to view a specific image, or to quickly jump between them.
This is really a great bargain for the price. About the only thing it doesn't do that I would have wanted is to playback mp3 files. But that isn't really a big deal since I have other ways of playing them.
I absolutely recommend this player - 2 big thumbs up!

LG DN898 1080p Upconverting DVD Player Review

(More customer reviews)The LG DN898 is a very good player with a lot of great features: it does a good job of upscaling DVDs, it can output at a full 1080p, it supports playback of.mpeg, .avi (xvid/divx) and .srt files, and it can read from most recordable DVD formats as well as from USB. For the most part I have had a very good experience with this player and I would have rated it better if I had not discovered one glaring flaw. The LG DN898 is incapable of displaying 4:3 content in a pillarbox on a 16:9 screen. A pillarbox is the widescreen TV equivalent of a letterbox, the two black bars that appear on the top and bottom of a regular TV screen when playing a movie recorded in widescreen (16:9) format, only on a widescreen TV these bars appear as two black pillars on the left and right sides of the screen when playing fullscreen (4:3) content. This means that any video recorded in a 4:3 aspect ratio will be automatically stretched to fill the screen on a widescreen TV. If you prefer to have your video stretched to fit the screen then this shouldn't be a problem to you, in which case this player might be a good choice. However, if you prefer to watch video in its original aspect ratio then this is not the player for you. I have used other upconverting DVD players that let you choose whether or not you want to stretch the video. Considering the price of this player I am a bit disappointed that the LG DN898 does not offer this option.

Panasonic DMP-BD50K 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player Review

(More customer reviews)OK so I am one of the many who were waiting for this player for one big reason. I have expensive audio components and didn't want to replace them just to get HDMI input for True HD and DTS Master Audio. Now that I own it I can positively confirm that this player decodes both of the Hi-Def audio formats internally and sends them to the analog outputs... and OH MY what a huge difference over AC-3 or DTS!! The most noticeable thing is the ambient sound that is lost in compression. Watched 5th Element last night and the beginning of the movie starts with this echoing reverberation during the credits. In AC3 it sounds like an echo, but in TrueHD it's all filled in with a very deep sound field and detailed ambient sound. The overall impression is sound that is much fuller and balanced. It also has a nice feature called Dialog Enhancer which bumps the volume of dialog in soundtracks so you can hear the dialog when listning at low volume levels (so your spouse can sleep...feelin' me?). In 2 words - Worth it!
Next the features and a bonus for older Mitsu owners. I have a Mitsubishi WD-62628 1080P DLP TV. This unit was one of the first 1080P TV's made. They did not have the video processing capability at the time to take a 1080P input. So it's max input on the main HDMI connector or component video is 1080i and the TV upconverts to 1080P. This has left owners of this family of TV's with a quandary in that they want to see movies from their Blu-Ray player in 1080P not 1080i. There have been rumors that you can use the HDMI-2 input for native 1080P input if you tell the TV that a computer is connected. Well I can confirm that this actually works just fine !! You set the Net Command to enable HDMI-2 and that a PC is what is on that input. Disable the audio part (if you are going to use the analog outputs from the Panny like me) and then tell the blu-ray player to output at 1080P (rather than auto-detect). The TV will momentarily display a message that the video signal is non-standard, but will then display it anyway. So I get HD audio and 1080P video with my older TV and non-HDMI audio processor!! Bonus #2 is that this Panny player also has picture controls for brightness, contrast, gamma, color, and black level so you can tweak the picture if necessary. It also has canned settings (normal, cinema and 2 others). I find that movies look best in Cinema. It deepens the color and seems to provide better color spectrum.
I hope this answers the questions for a bunch of you that are still sitting on the wall. This one finally does it all, A/V wise. I have not hooked it up to the LAN yet for BD-Live functions. That was not a big part of my plan for this but will happen shortly.

Post Review Note: One thing I have discovered is that the picture controls on the BD50 don't offer as much adjustment as the controls on a TV. The straight 1080P input is a little on the bright side. I found that the BD50 will not enable 1080i component video and HDMI at the same time, it's one or the other. Once you turn on HDMI, it drops the component video to standard def no matter what you set it on. This means I can't look at upconverted 1080i (via component video) with full picture controls vs 1080p on HDMI-2 with the minimal controls offered by the BD50 without stopping the movie and re-starting it... Jury is still out on this one.

Great upconverting picture, sound, fast loading, reads and plays really bad discs that would skip or freeze on my old dvd/vcr player. Plays burned DVDs with no problems. Very easy to set up and hook up.
I bought this as a replacement for a refurbished Toshiba DVD player that only lasted 15 mos. I have used this DVD player for 1 day. The only problem is an incredibly small remote which is hard to read if you need reading glasses and no hdmi port.

Sylvania NB530SLX Blu-ray Disc Player (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)This player does all the important stuff very well. I was able to have it entirely set up in about 5 minutes. The picture quality is great, and I'm especially pleased with the upconversion of my DVD library. It does not have a remarkable number of outputs, but it has the HDMI and Coax outs that I need. The downsides are the cheap-feeling remote, the time it takes initially to load Blu Ray disks, and the fact that higher-end players have higher-end features.
Pros:
-cheap (especially since I got it free with the Amazon deal!)
-has the necessary features (mute HDMI audio, picture settings)
-great picture.
-Really easy to set up and use.
Cons:
-The remote is rather sad and pathetic.
-Long load times of Blu Ray disks (does not appy to regular DVD)
-Lack of high-end features.

(More customer reviews)First of all, I can't stand it when people rate decent products with 1 star. This product can be misleading, but is still a great value. Rating this product at 1 star because there are better, more expensive receivers out there is just foolish. This product is great... for the price.
Good luck finding a receiver at this price that has this many inputs and this feature set. No audio on the HDMI out? Who cares! The audio is supposed to go through the receiver anyway! And for the guy who says this isn't good for the XBOX 360... hook it into the SAT input. That's component video and optical audio. What's the problem? I'm pretty sure no xbox 360 game supports 1080p yet anyway, so this is perfectly alright.
One nice feature about this receiver is that it comes with a special microphone that hooks into the front. If you place the microphone near where you would normally be sitting, the receiver will adjust the speaker output to optimize the surround sound.
All the negative reviews I've seen here are unjustified. This is a great product for the price. You will not find another receiver in this price range that compares. I'm very happy with it... now all I need are some decent speakers and a powered sub.

(More customer reviews)This was Wal-Mart's Black Friday sale where they went pretty quick. I did pick one up a couple of days ago and hooked it up at home. The Good: Picture is amazing. I had a Sony upconvert that worked great, but nothing compares to Blu-Ray. The sound is crisp and clean. Also, you can access the menu and turn certain special features on and off while the movie is playing. The Bad: It does not connect to the internet. (You can upgrade the firmware by burning a CD from the mfg website and loading it into the BD player). It is BD 1.1 compliant which means you can do the pic in pic on some movies, but no online special features which is fine with me. I am one that just wants to watch the movie. I could care less that the director ate a bagel while filming that scene or chat with someone while watching a movie. The Ugly: Load time. There is really no difference between the loading of a regular DVD on my DVD player vs. loading one on this BD player. Overall, if you want a BD player without all of the bells and whistles just to watch Blu-Ray movies, this is a great buy.

Pioneer DV-410V-K Multi-Format 1080p Upscaling DVD Player Featuring HDMI Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased Pioneer DV-410V dvd player to replace a low-end Sony model that I have been using for a year. The Sony DVD player does not have a HDMI port, so I have been relegated to watching my Panasonic LCD TV via component video cable. I narrowed my choice between Pioneer and LG DN898 players. They are the two top rated DVD players according to Consumer Reports. Pioneer, with the score of 86, tops LG player (which gets 82). I saw no reviews for LG DN898 on the Amazon web site; Pioneer (Amazon's second bestselling upconverting DVD player; LG was #7) got 15 mostly positive reviews. So I went for the Pioneer player.
Pioneer DV-410V has a very handsome form factor. There are more controls in the front panel of the player than most other DVD players (even though I probably would not use any of them). Disc tray is very solidly made. The display is easy to read. Pioneer comes with plenty of connection options. Composite A/V, S-video, component video, HDMI, plus coaxial digial audio out. The notable omission is the optical digital output (fortunately I do not need it), which is available in Pioneer's higher-end models. The set up was very easy. Connect the HDMI cable, went through various settings in the Home Menu, and I was ready to watch my first DVD.
The Home Menu is a model of efficiency. It is divided into five major sections: Audio Settings, Video Adjust, Play Mode, Disk Navigator, and Initial Settings. It is very easy to navigate through each section using cursor buttons. I especially like the Video Adjust Menu, which give you control over such settings as Sharpness, Brightness, Contrast, Gamma, Hue, and Chroma Level. This may be redundant with many TVs, but my Panasonic LCD display has minimal picture settings, so some of those settings are still useful.
The picture quality is much better than what I have been used to with the Sony, at least due to using HDMI instead of component video cable. The picture is more lively and rich than what I have been used to. The picture quality difference was most evident when viewing JPEG photo files. They were like viewing them on my computer display, except on very large scale. I gave up watching JPEG files with the Sony because the images were so pixelated and the resolution was so terrible.
Audio was very rich and clear, although this only happened when I disabled surround and other special audio features. Sometimes less is more. Too many special settings actually have opposite effect. The player remembers last five discs, and it resumes the play automatically. When I stop a DVD and then press play there is no delay; on my old Sony there was a considerable delay
So why only four stars. Any man-made product has at least a bit of imperfection, so this DVD player is no exception. My major gripe is that Pioneer is noisy. It is not a problem when I am watching a DVD, but when I first turn on the unit or when I pause or stop the noise level is perceptible. Next, the display in front of the unit is fixed at displaying chapter and elapsed time (for DVDs). I rather have the flexibility to change it to the remaining time, which is more useful to me. I can view the remaining time and other informations by pressing Display button on the remote (and I have to press the button two more times to get rid of the onscreen display), but that's not as convenient as just looking at the unit's display. Time format is in minutes and seconds, so 1 hour 25 minutes will show up as 85:00, instead of 01:25:00 which I am accustomed to viewing. The remote control is not a universal remote, so I cannot control my TV with it. It does not even have volume or mute buttons. This is no problem for me because I use Sony RM-VL600 8-Device Universal Learning Remote, which I would recommend very highly. Lastly, it only comes in black, if anyone cares.
My next venture into this field will be for a Blue ray player. I wanted to wait purchasing it until blue ray becomes the de facto standard. I would not mind if I wait a year or two until prices of blue ray players come down to around $100 level. Until then, Pioneer DV-410V will serve as a useful bridge. It's picture and audio qualities (the two most important factors) are very impressive. Pioneer has a long history of making quality audio-video products. As I mentioned earlier, it tops all DVD players in the Consumer Reports ratings. The negative aspects of this DVD player are very minor and in no way diminish the appeal of owning this fine product. Therefore, I would highly recommend Pioneer DV-410V to anyone who's shopping for a DVD player.
