Magnavox 42MF437B 42-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV Review

(More customer reviews)I have had the Magnavox 42MF437B 42" LCD HDTV for about 4 months now. I couldn't be happier with the purchase. First of all, we use this TV in our Family room with a DIRECTV HD DVR. I have it set to use the 1080i display from the HD DVR (1080p not available). The picture is very crisp and bright on HD channels that are available. Even using 1080i, fast motion does not seem to have "trails" as I would have expected. I've experimented with 720p vs. 1080i and, to my untrained eye, the higher definition setting even in interlaced is better.
Let me go backward for a minute to when I received the TV. The box itself is pretty ingenious. If you bother to read the directions (which, for once, I actually did), the box is quite helpful in setting up the TV. It allows you to mount the stand and plug in the lower speaker in a safe and secure manner prior to standing it up.
One of the reasons out side of the features this TV appealed to me was the fact that is is 40.9" wide. We have a TV cabinet that I really did not want to replace that could only accommodate a 41" wide set. I had been looking for something that would fit this range so that my +$1,000 TV wouldn't cost me +$2,000 in furniture. Once I assembled the TV it slide in perfectly with virtually no gap on the side of the cabinet. It sort of has a built in look now. The menus for setting up the TV are fairly intuitive and easy to configure.
In the beginning, I was using Dish Network standard service and pulling HDTV over the air with an RCA antenna. This was serviceable but the signal from the OTA side was too week to have reliable service. The TV did just find with the OTA signal when environmental conditions were just right (read, after the sun went down). I am much happier with the DIRECTV HD service now.
All in all, this is a fantastic TV for my needs and would highly recommend it to anyone considering a 42" 1080p TV.

Magnavox Blu-Ray DVD Disc Player, NB500MG1F Review

(More customer reviews)This was Wal-Mart's Black Friday sale where they went pretty quick. I did pick one up a couple of days ago and hooked it up at home. The Good: Picture is amazing. I had a Sony upconvert that worked great, but nothing compares to Blu-Ray. The sound is crisp and clean. Also, you can access the menu and turn certain special features on and off while the movie is playing. The Bad: It does not connect to the internet. (You can upgrade the firmware by burning a CD from the mfg website and loading it into the BD player). It is BD 1.1 compliant which means you can do the pic in pic on some movies, but no online special features which is fine with me. I am one that just wants to watch the movie. I could care less that the director ate a bagel while filming that scene or chat with someone while watching a movie. The Ugly: Load time. There is really no difference between the loading of a regular DVD on my DVD player vs. loading one on this BD player. Overall, if you want a BD player without all of the bells and whistles just to watch Blu-Ray movies, this is a great buy.

MAGNAVOX NB500MG9 180P HDMI BLU-RAY DVD PLAYER Review

(More customer reviews)We purchased this item for about $130 on a black friday sale in Nov. 28, 2008. It worked great until 8:15 P.M. on March 29, 2009. It stopped playing Blu-Rays. After e-mailing Funai, I received a reply with a customer service number. I called that number and they referred me to a local repair center. I was advised by this authorized repair center I would have to pay a MINIMUM of $45, just to have them look at. (REALLY! $45 on something that isn't 4 months old. What about the 1 year manufacturer's warranty? I am aware that I could have purchased an extended warranty from Wal-Mart, but most financial experts say they are unecessary upcharges designed to make more money for the stores. These experts say if you feel that you need the extended warranty, just put that money toward a better product. (I sure wish we did). That $130 could have gone towards a Sony that we will now buy. Based on the "durability" on a Magnavox product and the "great" customer service provided by Funai, I will avoid these products in the future. And I would advise others to do the same.

The Magnavox H2160MW9 is is a mixed bag of fantastic abilities and a few disappointing failures rolled into one product. My 4-star rating is very generous, considering the negatives.
If you've invested time doing research on HDD recorders, then you know how limited the choices are. With further research, you'll find that the problems I'm having are not isolated incidents. Google the model number and you'll see.
FAILURES:

Magnavox NB530MGX Blu-ray Disc Player Review

(More customer reviews)This is a great player that offers an excellent picture, and is easy on the wallet. I bought this at Walmart for under $200 and I have been very pleased with the quality. I was blown away by the great picture blu-ray has to offer! Dont expect to many frills such as BD-Live, but do expect a great, "pop in your movie and go" player! It does have an sd-card slot that allows you to save bookmarks and view photos and video clips through the player onto you tv which is really great.
So if your on a budget and want an excellent player for any price, you cant go wrong with this one!
On a side note, some people complain about load times, and although it takes a bit longer to load BD discs than regular DVDs, its quite understandable and really only takes about 30 seconds (give or take a few).
