But Really? This is the best you can do HP?
$1200 laptop by the time it gets to your door ...OH after 4 weeks of waiting for it to be "Built" because you added "Upgrades"
By the time this junk gets to you, wouldn't it be great if it actually "Worked"?
But it did not and then began the endless loop of people that ask you to do static discharge tests and other time wasting garbage.
I spent 52 hours in one week with tech support!
Do you have time for that?
HP Should give me the laptop for free as pay for the hours I put in with them on this.
The Wireless in most of the HP mobile devices has issues and in these units it is fatal in my case it functioned for the first 15 minutes out of the box.
It may be that they are utilizing inferior wireless adaptors, I have read this on some of the blogs but I am not an expert, I just know mine would not work after many, many, hours of tech support calls and chats. The laptop simply didn't even "See" the adaptor. It was like it wasn't even in there?
At one point, I was actually asked by HP Tech support to take the machine apart and "Re seat" the adaptor (Read unscrew the cover take the card out by unscrewing it and then put it back together) I did it too! Did not help.
The restore to original factory setting...did that 4 times! No help.
These guys at HP do not have a clue but if you search on YouTube before you buy you will see there are pages and pages of folks that have similar "Issues" with HP products. They are not what they promise, you do not get what you pay for and while they look "Pretty" to some, the return is short lived before the gremlins appear.
Do not get caught in the HP "Trap" take your hard earn dollars elsewhere so you don't waste all the time I did.
Just trying to help others avoid the nightmarish experience I just went through and possibly save you valuable time and money.

Dell AX-3600GSL Adamo XPS 13.4-Inch Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium) Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased the Dell Adamo XPS about 2 months ago after debating between the raw performance of an Alienware laptop versus the thin-and-light Adamo XPS. I am glad to have chosen the Adamo XPS.
Unpacking the Adamo XPS, you'll see it comes with a 20 WHr battery, a mini-display port to DVI adapter, USB ethernet adapter, cleaning cloth, and power adapter with extension cord. The laptop itself is a mere 9.99mm thick and weighs 1.6 lbs with battery installed. The laptop comes with an Intel ULV processor, 128 GB solid state drive by Samsung (PM800 model if anyone wants to look at its specs), 4 GB of DDR3 RAM, Intel GM45 graphics, GPS and Skyhook wifi triangulation, light sensor, webcam, 802.11abgn, and bluetooth. The 13.4" widescreen is LED backlit and has a maximum brightness of 300 cd/m2 (translation, pretty freaking bright!). It also has a SIM card slot on the lower left corner of the chassis, but I cannot find any information as to whether it has WWAN built in or not.
Physically, the laptop has a very finished and svelte look and feel to it. After swiping your fingers over the capacitive sensor at the lid of the screen, the locks disengage using a current sensitive metal that warps when a charge is applied to it. When open, there is no flex at the joint, which was a concern of mine as it seemed like a weak pivot point, even when pushing down with the palm of my hand at the keyboard, there is no noticeable flex. As part of the design, the processor and memory was placed above the keyboard area, which cleverly allows for air ventilation below the laptop and when used on your lap, prevents your legs and wrist from getting warm. The keyboard is chiclet styled, made with metal rather than painted plastic. Two speakers are hidden underneath the R and I keys on the keyboard, while a third downward facing speaker is on the bottom of the laptop.
Now that introductions are out of the way, I'll give you some of my observations on the laptop.
- The solid state drive allows the laptop to boot fast, 15 seconds fast! After pressing the power button, it only takes the laptop 15 seconds to get to the windows login screen.
- It is very comfortable to use on the lap. This was a concern of mine as the unconventional style looked like it would dig into my lap. I was pleasantly surprised that this was not the case, and in fact was more comfortable overall, especially when compared with my Macbook Pro (which is akin to using a clothing iron on your lap). The Adamo XPS weighs only about 2 lbs overall, which really is no heavier than a paperback book, and since Dell placed the highest heat generating parts (memory and CPU) above the keyboard where it is furthest from your lap and wrists, my lap stays nice and cool. I am continuously amazed at how it feels like I am typing on thin air while I am using the laptop on my lap.
- The engraving Dell chose to use to label the keys on the keyboard is annoying. It feels terrible when my nails slide over the key labels on the metal keyboard. It is like sliding your nails from a smooth glass surface to a surface made of sandpaper.
- For touch-typists like me, the lack of ridges on the J and F keys is another added annoyance.
- The buttons on the trackpad are springy and soft, nice!
- The computer comes with Fast Access Facial Recognition, which allows for you to use your face to login to the computer. From my experience, it works very well, and adds to that futuristic feel when all you need to do is sit down in front of your "thinnest laptop in the world" and watch it login for you.
- Center of gravity. With the unusual form factor, stability was a concern. The angle between the screen and keyboard cannot be opened greater than 60 degrees, which is a bummer when you are sitting close to the laptop. However, as all the heavy components are in the keyboard area, stability or the danger of tipping over was a non-issue.
-The display is VERY bright; it almost hurts my eyes to use it indoors above 50% brightness. The laptop has a built in light sensor next to the power button that adjusts the brightness of the screen automatically. Colors are nice but viewing angles on the screen is average, colors start to look "off" at 70 degrees away from looking straight at the screen. I guess I was just spoiled from using tablet pcs, which have very wide viewing angles.
- The battery is a pain to figure out how to remove. Dell designed the laptop so that you can "hot-swap" the batteries, that is, you can simply put the laptop to sleep and swap the batteries out without needing to boot the computer up again (it has a small internal battery that allows you 30 seconds to change the batteries). After much fiddling and being afraid of snapping the battery, I finally figured out how to properly remove the battery. Close the laptop and place it upside down, so that the battery is at the top facing away from you, the Dell logo on the underside should be upside-down. Using both hands, place the nails of your fingers in the crevice of the battery and apply a gentle force inwards towards the center of the laptop. While doing so, use your left hand's thumb to engaging the battery release lock, the battery should pop out with no resistance at all when done right. What were they thinking?
- Battery life with the standard battery is mediocre. Dell bundled a battery saving software that automatically turns off Windows Aero and engages CPU throttling to help save battery, but even then I only squeak by with 2.5 hours of usage with wifi.
- Even with using Intel's ULV processor sipping 10 Watts max, the computer feels extremely peppy, it has no problem multitasking with Hulu videos, working on Word and Excel, while surfing the internet at the same time. That said, it is not a gaming laptop, so don't expect it to play graphics-intensive games.
Overall, with minimum compromises, mainly in battery life, I feel Dell has created an engineering marvel. It is a product that truly showcases how far personal computing technology has brought us. I feel as if I made the right purchasing decision.Update 9-17-10:
Extended warranties on this laptop are a doozy! I called Dell to find out how much it would cost to extend my warranty from 1 year to 3 years. The cost quoted to me was $1500. ALMOST THE PRICE OF THE LAPTOP! The representative stated that the cost of the individual parts exceed $900 per part because of how specialized the laptop is. But still!

It's important to get one with a backlit keyboard like this one has - they are not standard, and most of them that are sold do not have it. It is something that you don't really know you need until you've already bought the computer. The 435M is a top notch graphics card and the newest generation from NVidia, and the Blu-Ray drive makes it future-proof (at least for now!). What's the point of buying a laptop nowadays that can't play Blu-Rays?? The 6GB of RAM instead of 4GB is also a nice addition.

The battery life is amazing, the display is awesome, and the fact that it already came with Windows 7 was really convenient. And it's so lightweight! As a web design major, I carry this thing around everywhere. My previous Dell brickbook nearly dislocated my shoulders. I'd recommend maybe getting a different color if you're worried about fingerprints, though, as they're quite noticeable. The only negative thing I have is the touch pad gestures. I thought that the "pinch" zoom in/zoom out features would be really handy but while browsing the web it would often zoom in and out on me without me doing much. But I just disabled that feature and it's great otherwise. :) It's a great buy, I'd recommend it to anyone.

(More customer reviews)I got the latest XPS 17 aka L702x last month to replace an HP Pavilion dv6. The specifications are,

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium.
My first impression is that the XPS is huge compared to the HP, even though the screen is just 1 inch bigger. The weight is also substantially greater. The 9-cell battery protrudes from the bottom, making it even harder to fit into tight space. Although the 9-cell is supposed to extend the battery life, I get just under 3 hours in mixed usage. So, the XPS is a desk-top replacement through and through. If mobility is an important consideration, the XPS 15 can be had with the same CPU and screen resolution, and will be a much better choice.
In terms of computing power, the XPS does not disappoint. The i7-2630QM is capable of 8 threads simultaneously, and I have not experienced any slow-down so far due to CPU overload. The GT555M can run all the latest 3D games if the graphics is set to low quality, but it gets really hot and loud, not to mention the quick battery drain. For gaming, a good desk-top remains the best option. The XPS comes with a pair of 3D glass, but I have not had the urge to try it out either for movie, because of the lack of interesting media, or for games, due to the heat and noise the GPU generates. I intend to use the computer for numerical work, and the CPU, the memory system and the hard drives are the key components.
6GB of memory and a 5400-rpm drive do not match well with the high-performing 2630QM, and I had planned to upgrade them right after the purchase. Once the machine arrives and gets its belly opened up, however, I am shocked to find just 2 SODIMM slots. Dell is advertising "up to 16GB RAM" in 4GBx4 configuration, and this is clearly not the case. After some exhaustive research, I finally find the explanation in an obscure Dell customer forum. It turns out that, to save literally a few pennies, Dell has used two different motherboards in the same model: one with 4 SODIMM slots and 3GB of GDDR RAM, the other with 2 SODIMM slots and 1GB of GDDR RAM. I had noticed and got puzzled by the $170 price difference when one stepped up from the GT555M 1GB to the GT555M 3GB. This kind of explains Dell's thought process in the pricing hierarchy. Still, I am upset that Dell fails to explain any of this on its website because there are customers like myself who do not care about the graphic RAM but do want to have the potential to upgrade to 16GB of system memory. I had paid $300 extra compared to HP dv7 for Dell exactly because XPS was supposed to be a premium brand without too much corner-cutting, but I under-estimated Dell's capacity for taking advantage of their customers. In the end, I can only replace the 2GB SODIMM with a 4GB module. The swap costs me $30 after the old SODIMM is sold on ebay, still much less than what Dell would have charged me to upgrade to 8GB memory in the factory.
Upgrading the hard drives, on the other hand, is something that the designers of XPS obviously take into account. The XPS comes with 2 drive bays, with the 640GB drive occupying the first one only. I have a new Crucial RealSSD C300 - Solid state drive - 64 GB - internal - 2.5" - SATA-600 ready and just have to move the 640GB drive to the second slot before replacing the SSD in the primary drive bay. Unfortunately, these drive bays are covered with aluminum shields that are attached to the motherboard with tiny screws. I strip one of the screw heads by using a driver a little too large. This necessitates some drilling followed by the application of a screw extractor. The whole process is extremely scary because of the danger of breaking the motherboard, and should be avoided if at all possible. In the end, I have to say that installing the SSD is quite straightforward if I had not had the accident with the screw. Once the hardware is in place, I reinstall the OS with the DVD which had cost me $19 extra, and wipe the 640GB drive to use for data. All the drivers are either included in a free DVD or can be downloaded from Dell's support site easily. The applications such as PowerDVD, however, are nowhere to be found. I have to call Dell support line and have the DVDs shipped to me, but they are at least free of charge. All together, the pre-installed softwares including the OS take up 30GB, leaving 29GB of usable space ("64GB" drives really have only 59GB of usable space in another case of misleading vendor advertisement.) on the SSD for other applications.
Once the upgrades are done, I am very happy with the performance of the machine. The SSD really makes a big difference. Windows 7 boots up at under 15 seconds and shuts down in 10. For this alone, I am willing to endure the bulk of the XPS 17 for the dual drive bays. Overall, however, I am somewhat less happy with Dell than HP for three reasons:
1. The HP dv6 just seemed more tightly put together;
2. I did not experienced misleading feature descriptions with HP;
3. I miss the fingerprint scanner on the HP notebook.

(More customer reviews)I am very impressed with this laptop. I needed something quickly because my old Dell laptop wasn't functioning well. This arrived to me sooner than expected and seller was very good about responding to some initial questions that I had. Overall, I am loving this new laptop! It's brand new and much improved from my older version. I love the look and functionality of it. The screen is nice and big for easier viewing, yet not too big. Laptop is fairly light given it's size. Haven't tested all the functionality yet since I just received it not too long ago, but so far it's great!

Sony VAIO VPC-F223FX/B Laptop (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this laptop a couple days ago and was very thrilled after weeks of research between other comparable laptops in the same field (Samsung RF711-S02 and ASUS N73SV-A3 to name the main contenders).
The laptop looked great right out of the box. Sony did a swell job designing this laptop. The keyboard is to die for with its chiclet buttons and good use of backlighting. Sound is good for the most part, but can't say I care for it much since I mainly use headphones with my computers. The screen and all of its 1080p 16.4" glory is amazing to look at. The VAIO comes with some bloatware consisting of a Norton trial, many Sony VAIO apps, and a MS office trial. Typical bloatware that one should expect. Battery life was around 2-3 hours. Really depends on what you're doing (My times consist of some web surfing and video files). Expect much lower times with gaming and other intensive apps. If you wish to take advantage of the true aspect ratio of the screen I would suggest putting the magnification percentage to 100%. The VAIO came preset at 125% which gives you less screen real estate. The VAIO is powerful with the equipped engine under the hood. The i7 2.00Gz and NVIDIA 540M are a force to be reckoned with. The VAIO does only come with 4GB of DDR3 ram though,something I planned to upgrade to 8GB, but be warned that the VAIO comes with 2x2GB sticks. Also the 640GB is spacious, but slow with its speed clocking in at 5400RPM.
So I would easily give this laptop a 5 out of 5, but it had one major flaw I could not over look. After all driver updates and MS updates the laptop exhibited a tendency to randomly lag on video and sound. No matter what output I used (HDMI, Built-in speakers and headphone jack). Sound would distort while listening to pandora. Video and sound would distort at random intervals while using Netflix, Youtube, Hulu, Windows media player and media player classic. I searched online and it seemed that I was alone on this so I ordered a replacement from Amazon and surely enough Amazon came through with overnight shipping on a new one that same day (I have 30 days to return my other one with collateral on my MasterCard.)
So I receive my replacement laptop and hope for the best. I open it up and the first thing I do is play some videos VIA Windows Media Player. Not even a minute in and the video once again lags and the sound distorts. I nodded my head in shame. Just to be sure I updated everything and tried again to no avail. I tried Pandora and Netflix with no luck either. I even went as far as to partition the drive and install a fresh Windows 7 64bit on the new partition hoping to maybe isolate a possible software issue. Same problem arose. I'm a big fan of Sony and their products, but this turned me off from any future laptops from them. Amazon's end was superb in terms of support, but the end product falls on Sony's lap. Perhaps I just happened to have gotten 2 faulty machines back to back by pure luck, but the odds of that happening are very rare for a laptop in the $1000+ range.
I looked around forums a couple days later and found that some people experience a problem with random lag in games while others have no problems at all. The people with no problems seemed to have bought theirs from places other then Amazon and Newegg (They carry the same models). Other retail outlets carry the same laptop, but the model numbers differ. So I assume that perhaps Sony is shipping some faulty laptops to certain outlets. I will end up returning my replacement for a full refund and maybe wait for the problem to get fixed. If not I will end up going with the Samsung RF711-S03 when it is released.Edit:
About 2 days into my replacement it has stopped exhibiting the previously mentioned flaw. I've decided to use the VAIO as my main PC for a week and put it under some heavy use to see if it acts up. If not I will end up keeping it and buying a 3-year Square-trade warranty to be safe. After using the VAIO for a couple days, without the hic-ups it had before, I can safely say it is amazing. Runs like a champ with no problems thus far. I will write back in a couple days to address the final state of which it's at and determine if I'll revise my rating.
Edit 2:
After having it for a week and a half I can safely say that the laptop has stopped with the hiccups. Very strange to be honest, but now that the laptop is back to normal I can safely say that it is a beast of a laptop. Revising my rating to 4 of 5 stars. Would be a 5, but due to the difficulties it displayed at first it lost a star. I will be buying the square-trade 3 year warranty just in case though.

I have owned my Dell Laptop for a year and have no complaints. It can get pretty warm with graphic intense games, but so did my old laptop, which would freeze up every few minutes. My favorite features are the backlit keyboard and slot-load DVD drive. I miss the plethora of USB slots, and prefered the earphone jacks up front, instead of on the side, as they are on the XPS. The screen makes movie-watching fun. I carry it to work almost daily and reccomend a case of substance as it feels quite heavy. Probably not a good idea for a travel laptop; it is billed as a desktop replacement, but it works well for me on the go.
