Lifebook PH520 Notebook Review

I originally purchased a 16" laptop with the thought in mind I would use it primarily as a home theater PC - plugged into my TV via an HDMI cord, as well as for some sporadic travel. That laptop for its size was one of the lightest out there, but it was a pain to take in and out of a backpack or bag. It now resides as the desktop of the household, plugged into a 21" moniter.
4.4" later...
I knew I wanted something with more processing power than a netbook and with the price that this one was presented to me at the time...it was a no-brainer!
I love the red - it makes it different! It has full Windows 7 and not the "slim" version that typically comes on netbooks. Since it comes with an HDMI port and wireless N, it makes the perfect HTPC, being able to watch streaming television and movies.
I typically get almost 4 hours of use time on the battery streaming movies, etc from on-line wirelessly.
For travel...it's the perfect size and light. The screen is nice and bright.
The only thing I have to complain about is the touchpad, I have a hard time using it compared to other laptops I've used. But since I only use it sparingly when I do travel and it mainly "lives" as an HTPC that I use with a wireless keyboard/mouse as a remote...it's an AWESOME - just-a-bit bigger than netbook - laptop!
Oh...did I mention I LOVE the red! Typically you have to pay for a "cool" color on a laptop, but this red is standard!

Asus USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive SDRW-08D2S-U (Black) Review

Asus USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive SDRW-08D2S-U (Black)

The ASUS SDRW-08D2S-U is the replacement model for the 08D1S. It's plug and play--with the CyberPower 7 port powered USB hub the drive installs without software and is recognized by Windows 7. It does, however, require 2 USB ports. The supplied cable is a Y-USB with 2 USB "A" connectors on one end.
A common complaint of notebook owners are malfunctioning internal optical drives. This drive will be my primary optical drive, and my internal notebook drive only a back-up if necessary. Rubber feet help keep the ASUS from sliding around. The provided stand didn't look very stable, and inserting a disc is actually safer with the drive horizontal.
It rips CDs and plays DVDs flawlessly--a better, faster drive than the one in my HP notebook. A quality piece of gear from ASUS.

Buffalo Technology MediaStation 8x Portable DVD Writer with LED Power Indicator DVSM-PC58U2VB (Black) Review

It's been 6 years since I bought a laptop with an optical drive, so a good external disc drive is pretty important. I had been using a feature rich LG Lightscribe for the last 4 years, but it finally gave up the ghost and left me without a reliable method to read or write CD's.
For my next drive I wanted something smaller, as there was nothing portable about the old LG. Enter the Buffalo MediaStation. I haven't had it very long, but I can report one 3 important facts.
1. You can run it off one USB port. The drive has two USB cables wrapped around the side and on the undercarriage. Whether or not you can run this off a single port depends entirely on your computer. The drive does make this easy for you by lighting up red or blue depending on your power needs. If it's blue you're golden; red and you're going to need that second USB port.
2. The drive is pretty fast for a bus-powered external. On a 1.3ghz Intel Dual Core 2 laptop with 4gb of RAM, iTunes encoded 160 kbps MP3's at 20x.
3. The DVD drive can be noisy. There's not a lot of room for insulation in this device, so it's going to rattle around some.
I can't speak for longevity, but so far it's been an excellent buy.

Zbox, Sff, Fusion, E350,2GDDR3 Review

Not sure why people are not talking about bitstreaming more on this AWESOME HTPC. Let me repeat that this PC does bitstream HD-DTS MA and Dolby True HD. This means all your BD rips (MKVs, m2ts) files will be able to pass your high resolution audio to your receiver. Does anyone even care about this feature? :)
If you have not tried HD audio with your BDs, you will drop your jaw because of the difference you hear between, AC3 and core DTS audio and "HD-DTS MA and Dolby True HD".I love this box so much. Runs cool quiet and just great.

Case Logic WDEC-10 EVA Molded 10-Inch DVD Player Case (Black) Review

Case Logic WDEC-10 EVA Molded 10-Inch DVD Player Case (Black)

My biggest difficulty in shopping for a case was finding one advertized for 10-inch players that actually fit them. Our 10-inch Toshiba fits perfectly in this case--even if the battery is attached. The main compartment is high enough to hold headphones without crushing them as well as the accessory cords and battery for our player. There is a side pocket that also has ample room for cords and a sleeve for DVDs. A previous reviewer said that this will not mount on the back headrest of his driver-side seat--I do not find such to be the case. The case includes instructions for mounting between two bucket seats or on the back headrest of one seat. A sufficiently versatile product.
