(More customer reviews)All I needed was a very basic external DVD burner. HP 1170e was the best of the bunch. This product will burn DVD-R & DVD+R at speeds 22x. For best results using those two formats I set my burning speed at 16x. I found that there was a definate improvement in visual quality by burning it a little slower. It records double-layer and rewritable DVDs at speeds up to 8x. It also does Lightscribe.
Presently I'm not real enthused with the selection of Blu-ray burners on the market. As of now they do not burn a disc that is equal to Blu-ray discs that are offered by the major producers either audio or visually. Matter of fact they don't do much better than the DVDs I burn with this HP which are easily up-converted by a Panasonic BD 30 & render a pretty good quality picture on a 1080p screen.
To date most of your true 1080p is delivered by commercially produced Blu-ray videos. It takes a lot of bandwidth to deliver 1080 Progressive Scan & much of what we get even with high speed cable or satellite is still 1080 Interlace. I will set up a totally separate dedicated system for burning High Def when the recording products & broadcast delivery systems improve.
For now, with a price tag of about $60 brand new, this is a pretty good little product. Assuming you have a decent DVD burning program, a decent codec & a download manager to speed the process it gives you a pretty good DVD. Mine came with a NERO 8 burning program which I didn't use because I'm happy with the one I already have. It's very easy to hook up to your computer with the provided USB 2.0 interface cable. Then you simply plug in the power cord & it does exactly what it advertizes. With the exception of Hi Def it records to all major formats on one drive & the completed disc will play on most any DVD player so you can view it on TV.
