TV's, theater rooms, with $50K audio systems wired in; and I have never
seen a TV with a better picture.
I bought this TV within a week of Consumer Reports rating it as the best
picture they had ever tested, and I was still surprised at how breathtaking the picture was.
You cannot overrate this TV and its capabilities to deliver a picture like none you've seen before.
I do implore you, however, to invest in a blu-ray DVD player and a high quality HDMI cable for the full effect. The picture, when playing a blu-ray DVD on the new Panasonic blu-ray DVD player, along with a high quality HDMI cable (Panasonic makes maybe the best available for only $25)
is unbelievable. The definition is so amazing that your opinions of beautiful big screen actresses may come back down to earth after seeing the the blemishes in their complexion that you never would have seen on a
regular TV.
This TV is the pinnacle. There is no TV better.

The Panasonic TH-42PZ700U 1080p Plasma HDTV sports a 42-inch plasma screen with 1080p resolution for a crystal clear viewing experience. It will feel right at home as the centerpiece of a home theater setup.
An Understated Beauty The TH-42PZ700U does not look like it's trying too hard. Instead, it lets the big screen speak for itself. You will be extremely hard pressed to find anything close to the picture quality of this set for the money (the only real contender is the Samsung D450 series). Coming from LCD's, I was a bit nervous about moving to Plasma due to stories of burn-in. Overall, I am very happy with my decision to go with the Panasonic TC-P46X3.
Pros:
1. Great contrast ratio, nice deep blacks and rich colors. The screen is never too dark or too bright or washed out.
2. Great panel response time, little to no ghosting.
3. Price!
Cons:
1. Reflective screen (if you have a lot of light in the room while you're watching, it can be distracting as it reflects off of the darker areas of the picture).
2. Image retention (NOT burn-in) does occur, but disappears when you use the screen wipe white bar feature. I'm also still in the first few hundred hours of pixel life, so this may become less and less of an issue as the phosphors age.

Panasonic TC P58V10 - 58" plasma TV - widescreen - 1080p (FullHD) - HDTV Review

(More customer reviews)I've been looking to upgrade my old 42" plasma for over a year, and was tempted to get a current generation LCD because their images seem to "pop" in stores, whereas the latest plasmas appear dim by comparison. But after more than a year of research, viewing, and waiting, I decided to buy this set based on all the reviews I read online, especially on CNET and the AVS forums, which is where very knowledgeable audio-video consumers hang out. I could not be happier.
1. Before I get to my personal experience with this set, let me share a bit of my online and field research, which I hope is helpful. First of all, the general consensus on the AVS forums is that the the Panasonic V10 plasmas are among the top HDTVs--if not the top--in overall image quality and value of this generation, and that includes LCDs. Other online reviews, like that of CNET (for the 54V10) give them very high marks as well.
The alternatives I was seriously considering, including the latest and flashiest Samsung "LED" LCDs, were generating lots of complaints online about quality control and image problems. For much more money, the higher-end LCDs offer features like 240Hz processing and local backlighting or LED edge-lighting that try to catch up to the smooth motion and beautiful blacks of plasmas. But they can create other visual problems. 240Hz processing gives movies a "soap opera" look to them. I saw this in store on several expensive Samsung LCDs. Transformers did not look epic; it looked like it was filmed with a camcorder on a studio set. Local backlighting can lead to "clouding," where dark scenes are not evenly lit but have splotches of white (for the regions that are not locally dimmed in the scene). LED edge-lighting can led to a "flashlight" effect in dark scenes, where the sources of the edge lights appear from the corners of the the screen like flashlights. These lighting defects may not be visible in store lighting, but many purchasers have expressed dismay at seeing them in a darkened room at home.
So, for much less money, I got a plasma without any of these problems, and with beautiful colors and fluid motion that even the most expensive LCDs of this generation cannot match. The picture is gorgeous. Food Network HD looks so savory, and sports and gaming are amazing. Everything looks natural and pleasing, not plastic, too bright, or over saturated like many LCDs.
With blu-rays, the V10s can play movies at their native speed of 24 frames per second, which gives the same cinematic look that you see in theaters. As I mentioned, the higher-end LCDs, with their 240Hz rendering turned on, instead produce a "soap opera" look. In fact, many AVS forum posters recommend turning off this "premium" feature as a result. Watching Slumdog Millionaire on my 58V10 at times made me forget that I was at home rather than at the movies. Pixar films look amazing.
(Note: if you have a blu-ray player like a Playstation 3, be sure to allow it to output at 1080p/24Hz, and in the advanced picture menu on the V10 allow it to play at 96Hz (4x24Hz) and HD Size 2 to see blu-rays in true cinematic glory and 1080p resolution.)
2. A few words of advice about plasmas for first-time owners. First of all, don't be scared about burn-in or image retention. Burn-in is largely a thing of the past. However, on the safe side, you should turn down the contrast and brightness to 50 or below for the first 100 hours or so, when the phosphors are newer and more prone to image retention. The "standard" setting out of the box is fine for this, and looks quite nice, if a bit understated. You can find advice about how to "break-in" a plasma on the AVS forums. Basically, for the first 100 hours or so, dial down the settings, watch full screen HD, stretch standard definition (4:3) to fill the screen, vary your content, and avoid leaving on static images (e.g. CNN or ESPN logos, game stats, etc.) for too long.
Second, CNET has settings for the 50V10 that some swear by for bringing out the set's beautiful picture quality. You can start with those and adjust to your liking if you don't want to pay for calibration. For my part, after trying and tweaking the CNET settings, as well as some posted by other owners on the AVS forums, I returned to the standard settings and simply raised the contrast from 50 to 85. The result, in terms of color, contrast, and brightness, is very pleasing to my eyes.
Third, don't judge HDTVs based on what you see in stores. As noted, they crank up the settings like crazy to lure consumers, and LCDs cranked up have a lot more "pop" to them. But the lighting in your home is much different, and what may pop out at you in stores may burn your eyes over extended viewing at home. This is my second plasma, and I have a smaller Panasonic LCD at home as well. The plasmas look bright enough and plenty beautiful at home, and I prefer their natural colors and motions over the LCD. Think Venus de Milo versus Pamela Anderson. The latter certainly has more "pop," but the former has more staying power.
Fourth, read up on plasmas (and LCDs) on the AVS forums. It'll help you make a more informed decision, as well as point you to other reputable online retailers and deals.
Finally, don't worry about 58" being too large. My couch is 10.5 feet away, and it's just about the right size for that distance. The set is viewable (and indeed awesome) from 7-9 feet. 65" would have given me an even more impressive "home theater" feel from my couch. But then, it's much more expensive, and because it is bigger, has a lower "wife acceptability factor."
Of course, there are other good HDTVs out there, including the Samsung PN63B590 63-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV, which I seriously considered. To some AVS folks, the Samsung has slightly better colors, while the Panasonic has better blacks. The Samsung is bigger and the bezel is sleek like a picture frame. However, many report an audible buzzing from the Samsung during viewing (all plasmas buzz slightly, but the sound is usually audible only within a few feet in a quiet room). To me, that's typical of the difference between Samsung and Panasonic: the former is flashier, but the latter is better quality.
So, in the end, I bought this HDTV, and am enjoying it immensely. For the great price and quality, you can't go wrong with this set.

(More customer reviews)I previously owned a bulky 46" DLP but decided I needed a new and smaller TV due to moving into a smaller place. I researched for a while and decided on this television, the deciding factors being 1080p, contrast, and refresh rate. I have to say, I'm very pleased.
This is the first full HD television I've ever owned. After tweaking with the picture I stuck in Wall-E on Blu-Ray and was amazed by the clarity. I realized just how much I'd been missing out on HD with my other TV.
I wish it has a PC input, but you can get HDMI adapters for that. The picture quality of an HDMI connected device looks awesome, but I've noticed it's a little dark with component devices like game consoles as well as cable and HD signal channels. Games look good though, even the Wii looks pretty good. I wish I could have tested out my XBox360 more on this set but it unfortunately broke two days after getting the TV. Figures...
I bought this TV with hopes of getting the best Blu-Ray picture at this price range and I think I got it. At under $900 this TV is a steal.

I did a lot of shopping; finally deciding on this television & I am very happy I did. This TV is fantastic: Beautiful colors - 1080p - 600Hz Refresh Rate - 2,000,000:1 Contrast Ratio. The last two numbers make LCD's come up very short. In case you don't know: The contrast ratio is a measure of the difference between white and black. The higher the contrast ratio, the blacker the blacks & the whiter the whites. The deeper blacks make the colors really pop. This is where Plasma completely dominates LCD.
Sound & Vision Magazine rated these Panasonic Viera Plasma televisions right under the Pioneer Kuros. This is high praise considering that they had rated the Pioneers the best TV, of any kind - anywhere, for the last two years. Considering that the Kuros are 4 times the price, this TV was the obvious pick.
For the last years; the knocks against plasmas were the issues of Burn-In and excess heat compared to LCD's. The issue of Burn-In has been addressed. It is not a problem anymore. In addition, I have not noticed the TV giving off any abnormal heat. As a matter of fact, I don't notice any heat from it at all. Since these issues have been fixed, Plasma's should be much higher on everyone's shopping list.
A couple of side notes: 1) since I got it I have moved from cable to Dish. This has made a big improvement, & 2) the ability of take an SD card directly from the camera, insert it into the TV, and play the images is a nice feature.
I ordered direct from Amazon with the free shipping. The television arrived quickly and in perfect condition. The delivery people were accommodating and professional. They set everything up & were nice enough to even move some furniture around.
If you are considering a television in this price range, I think this is the one to get.

Panasonic VIERA TC-P42ST30 42-Inch 1080p 3D Plasma HDTV Review

(More customer reviews)The picture quality of this television is really outstanding. It is however compromised by an issue common to all 2011 Panasonic plasmas known as "Fluctuating Brightness". About a half of a second after a scene change there is sometimes an instantaneous change in the overall brightness of the screen. Full discussion of this issue can be found by Googling: "panasonic 2011 fluctuating brightness".
Panasonic, to their credit, has recognized this as an issue and has come up with a solution that eliminates it. All sets produced after August and have a serial number of "xx1215xxxxxx" or higher will have new software installed that eliminates these brightness fluctuations from happening. If you have an earlier model and notice these fluctuations, contact Panasonic and let them know. They should either schedule a Panasonic employee to flash the software to your EEPROM, or they will schedule a 3rd party tech to replace your A-Board with one that already has the new software installed. In my case, they replaced the A-Board. Since then I have not seen any fluctuation and I am now completely satisfied with my set's remarkable picture quality.
Otherwise this television is exactly what I was looking for. Great price, superb picture quality, good Internet connectivity and interface. 3D is nice for future-proofing but it wasn't something I was actively looking for, but Panasonic sets with the best 2D picture quality are all 3D capable. Panasonic's menu interface seems a little more dated than their competitions, but it is simple and straightforward which makes it very functional without any extra eyecandy. The ST series is a great value if you don't need the somewhat fancier styling of the gt or vt series, or the thx certified picture mode, or the extra connections (st lacks vga, and has 3 instead of 4 hdmi ports). Also the st is the only series to offer the 42" size screen. For me it all boils down to this being the perfect television for 2011 now that Panasonic has given us a solution to the problem of Fluctuating Brightness.
**COMMENT ON PANASONIC'S RESPONSE**
I think Panasonic really demonstrated how committed they are to their product's picture quality by addressing this issue. Instead of writing this off as only a minor issue, they stepped up and supported their customers. This is a great response that insures that without condition Panasonic's line of 2011 3D televisions have the best picture quality you can buy. THANK YOU PANASONIC!

LG 60PX950 60-inch 1080p 3D Ready Plasma HDTV Review

(More customer reviews)I have had this TV for about three weeks now, and I am very impressed. The features are very comprehensive with internet capabilities that not only includes Netflix and Vudu, but also Yahoo Widgets. And every time you enter its internet capabilities, it makes a quick check for updates, so it should be easy to pick up enhancements if/when LG introduces them in the future. The TV comes with two remotes, one of which has a motion sensor (think Wii) so when you wave it in the air it moves a cursor around over menus on the screen. I think that's a great concept and it works well for basic menu function. The USB port reads external hard disks with all of the different content I have thrown at it without any problems, and it has a great interface for navigating the folders.
The picture quality is excellent as compared to the 65 inch 1080P Mitsubishi I replaced, but also as compared to the other 6 TVs in my house. Nothing beats the last generation plasma screens in brilliance and contrast. I actually still find myself starring in amazement at the quality of the picture while watching shows.The 3D features are much more than just a gimmick. I have four 3D movies, of which "A Christmas Carol", "The Grand Canyon", and "Under the Sea" are absolutely spectacular. The latter is provided free with the BX580 3D Blu-ray player after sending in a coupon (I received it in the mail after about two weeks). I wear eye glasses when watching TV, and I was concerned that it would be a hassle to have the 3D glasses "on top" of those, but the 3D effect is good enough to make it worthwhile.
The sound quality of the TV is what you would expect, but isn't of much interest to me since I have it hooked up to a Pioneer VSX-1020 amplifier. Sure sounds great through the amplifier and my Harman Kardon speakers. One item of some concern, however, is that the "HDMI-CEC" (or LG's Simplink) doesn't work quite the way it should with that amplifier and I am not able to fully control the receiver through HDMI. However, using a Harmony remote provides much of the same capabilities.
Mounting a 60 inch plasma is not an easy job (it is heavy, and not easy to lift - even for two people), but it sure pays off with the way this TV looks! It doesn't have a frame in the normal sense. Just one large glass panel. And it looks great - very clean and almost decadent. I used the Simplicity SXDP4 for the mount and it gets it as close to the wall as possible for this TV if you get angled plugs (HDMI, Toslink, and Coax - the last two are only needed if you get over-the-air broadcast), and an Ethernet cable with a very short plug. It's a tight fit, but it looks fantastic!
This TV is excellent in almost every way and highly recommended! I would buy it again in a heartbeat!
**** UPDATE **** I have recently discovered that the audio output (e.g. from the optical out cable) from Netcast (e.g. Vudu, NextFlix, etc.) on this TV is only 2.1, which makes those pay services useless for any serious home theater viewing with this TV (I will instead need to use my LG blu-ray, which is also equipped with Netcast and with true surround sound output). Therefore, I reduced my rating by one star. I sure hope a firmware upgrade can fix this in the future, and that such an upgrade is possible. If you bought the TV and the lack of surround sound from Netcast bothers you, let LG know!
**** UPDATE #2 **** Apparently, LG listened! This evening the TV found new firmware and updated itself, and I am now getting Dolby 5.1 surround sound from Vudu!!! I no longer have any complaints about this TV, and I have now had it for almost two months.

(More customer reviews)Purchased for our master bedroom, the Panasonic TC-P50X1 50" 720p has true brilliant color, impressive blacks, great resolution (looks like a 1080p to me and I am a picky engineer), surprisingly good sound and great looks. It sports the lowest price per square inch of screen area and beats LCDs hands down with its 600Hz refresh rate (absolutely no motion blur) and looks the same no matter where you are in the room. After considerable research, the TC-P50X1 was the clear choice due to its price, performance and appearance. A super buy.

Panasonic VIERA G10 Series TC-P50G10 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV Review

(More customer reviews)The P50G10 is my second HD Plasma experience, the first being a 2004 Panasonic, which still looks and works quite well. It has found another spot in our home to make room for the new G10 in our family room. When searching for and finally selecting the new Panasonic G10, I was comparing choices against this first experience considering both the manufacturer and the plasma technology. While I have a few smaller sized LCD's, mostly in the 20-32" range, I have never been overly impressed with the picture. The seem a bit cartoonish, even in HD mode, so I quickly settled on a plasma as my technology choice. Having made that decision the alternatives in terms of manufacturers narrowed quickly. Wh Pioneer exiting the Plasma business, and considering my experience with my original Panasonic plasma the brand decision was made. Selecting which model from Panasonic boiled down to scouring the 2009 product announcements and available reviews (CNET), and making the trade-offs on size, cost and availability. This all led me to the P50G10, which was a good fit on all points.
I have had the unit installed and working for 4 weeks now, and must say its been an extremely satisfying time. The G10 is a major step up, from my previous plasma, in terms of picture, inputs i.e. 3 HDMI vs 1, and ability to control each picture setting independently. I have tweaked the picture setting on the Standard and THX settings a bit to sharpen and brighten the picture a bit, but most of the other settings are very good out of the box. As the unit is stand mounted, and in a room with mostly indirect and overhead lighting there are no issues with glare or light reflection, from the main glass or its glossy black bezel.
In the process I also moved up to a Panasonic BMP-BD60 (will write a separate review on it) Blu Ray player and the 1080P picture is nothing short of amazing. As these are both Panasonic units they inter-operate with VieraLink which simplifies and automates the way the two units operate together, a nice but not essential feature. I setup a Wireless ethernet bridge (Linksys WET54G) to feed the VieraCast function on the G10, and it works flawlessly. At this time the amount of content available is limited, but one can see the potential, if Panasonic can bring more content services to this function. The G10 does employ a set of power consumption controls. There are both Input Idle and In-Activity based auto-power off modes to save on power consumption, which is good as plasma's are a bit power hungry.
To be balanced the G10 does have a few shortcomings. The sound from the onboard speakers is a bit thin. You can mitigate this some by pumping up the Bass control and turning on the Bass Boost, but its just not a rich sound experience. I think Panasonic can do better with some higher quality speakers and a small sub-woofer. I, and I suspect most others, have a surround system connected and utilize it for a better sound experience.
I also preferred when Panasonic placed the additional inputs into a trap door on the front of the plasma, the G10 has these on the left (facing) edge. To me it was more convenient and accessible to have these set of inputs up-front.
All in all, the G10 is a high quality Plasma with terrific features and future expandability. If offers a near perfect picture across multiple inputs and types of content.

Panasonic VIERA S1 Series TC-P46S1 46-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV Review

(More customer reviews)I ordered the TC-P46S1 from Amazon on July 6. TV was delivered exactly one week later by CEVA logistics. Fantastic service!
Now on to the set. I have owned two televisions in the past 15 years. The first was a 19" Zenith CRT. The second was a cheap 27" Apex CRT that I bought from Sam's Club about seven years ago. I had been waiting to buy a HDTV until a decent 1080p set was available for a price that I considered reasonable if amortized over ten years. Each person has their own definition of reasonable, but I felt that time had finally arrived.
I researched this purchase for about two months. Early on I decided I wanted Panasonic plasma. Plasma is currently the only choice for those who want the best possible picture at a given price point. The only question was which model and what size? There were three models in my price range when I decided to buy: the X1, the S1, and the G10. The X1 series is Panasonic's 720p line of plasmas. It comes in 42" and 50" sizes. For my viewing distance (10 feet), 720p was a definite possibility. The S1 series is Panasonic's lowest 1080p plasma line. The G10 is a step up from the S1 and includes a THX mode and Viera Cast, Panasonic's internet and video on demand service. A decent rule of thumb is that each step up in size is about $200 and each step up in model type is about $200. For example, the 42" G10 is about the same price as the 46" S1 and the 50" X1.
I created cardboard mock-ups of the 42", 46", and 50" sets and placed them where the TV would go to help determine the correct size. It quickly became clear that 42" was too small while 50" was too large for my personal taste. The 46" was perfect. Unfortunately, this eliminated the X1 series from contention as there is no 46" set in that line. I would have bought the X1 had it been available. That set is the best HDTV for the money that is offered right now, IMO. Still, 46" was the sweet spot for me, so I was going to have to move up to a better model. Now the question was should I go with the TC-P46S1 or TC-P46G10?
In my case, I was planning on buying the Panasonic DMP-BD60 Blu-ray player to go with the set. When I was ready to buy, Amazon was offering $150 off the BD player when purchased with an S1 set or $200 off when purchased with a G10 set. The price of the BD60 itself was $200, so that made the deal irresistible. The BD60 also offers Viera Cast, which would have duplicated that functionality if I went with the G10 set. So the decision came down to whether or not I wanted THX for an extra $150. In the end, I decided the cost was not worth it and went with the S1. I have no regrets about that decision at all.
The color and detail on this set is fantastic. Watching the BBC Planet Earth Blu-ray set in 1080p is awe-inspiring! This set paired with the BD60 is a match made in heaven and a much better setup than many others costing hundreds of dollars more. Colors look realistic (and can be made more realistic with some tweaking or a professional ISF calibration). The set has plenty of connections including three HDMI inputs; however, I've found that pairing this with a good AV receiver that has HDMI output makes the number of the connections on the set irrelevant. Even the onboard sound on the TV is decent, but if you're purchasing a TV of this caliber, you would probably want to hook it up to a decent sound system to fully appreciate the home theater experience. The set also has an SD card slot for viewing photos, so the TV can stand in as a very large digital picture frame if you are so inclined.
One of the knocks against plasmas are that they put off more heat than LCDs. Really, this is a non-issue, IMO. The amount of heat generated is far less than a much smaller CRT. Yes, it's warmer than an LCD, but are you really willing to live with all the faults of LCD (less contrast range, poor off-angle viewing, and poor black levels) just to have a TV that is a little bit cooler? Are you watching TV in your family room or a freezer? One consideration that is a possible concern is that the anti-reflective coating is not very effective. If you have strong reflections that you are unable to control, you may want to consider an LCD, although the best LCDs have glass panels instead of matte screens anyway. Overall, I don't think you can buy a better TV for the money (well, maybe the TC-P50X1). Highly recommended!

Compared it with more expensive Panasonic "Infinite Black" G model and it's impossible to see the difference in real video content. You need to be in total darkness and have very high quality, low noise signal with large swatches of black and put them side to side to notice a slightly darker black in G models. Of course, just watching TV you will never think I wish blacks were deeper.
I've watched HD programs over the air, from blu-ray, Netflix from Roku, and from PC over HDMI. All modes 480/720/1080 progressive and interlaced displayed perfectly, and TV did a good job upscaling lower resolution to native 1080. No problems with motion, no blurring, no color fading or runoffs. TV does have a slightly lower moving picture resolution 900 lines (vs 1080 lines in top models), but it's quite impossible to notice that without measurements. So sports viewers will be satisfied. Also, on a positive side, the screen is not as glossy as the majority of other plasmas, so reflections are subdued.
I've been using this set for a few days now, so I can't comment on "image retention" problems that previous generations had. Supposedly the phosphors used in this set are improved from previous year, and reportedly they last longer. Just be sure you turn on the "pixel orbiter" to avoid burning in the logos and avoid prolonged display of static images. You can also run "scrolling bar" once a day for 15 minutes for the first week to age the phosphors evenly. Not all plasma owners believe a break-in period is necessary for the later generations of plasma TVs, and no plasma manufacturers now suggest their sets require break-in.
The description Amazon (and it looks now they removed it) seemed to suggest that TV had a built-in Wi-Fi. It doesn't, you need to buy a separate Wi-Fi USB adapter for that. Due to lack of adapter I cannot tell if IPTV and DLNA are working as expected. The other negative is common to all plasmas, which is high power consumption. You don't find this information advertised anywhere, because this set is rated at a whopping 339W. The built-in audio is weak, it has two tiny 10W speakers. It's fine for casual watching TV programs, but if you want to watch movies you probably want to invest in a separate audio system.
This TV may lack all the bells and features you can find in more advanced models, but it does deliver an excellent picture at a very reasonable price and that what matters most.
Edit 5-8-2011. I installed USB Wi-Fi adapter (Netgear N600) to test the Viera Tools. I didn't find them very useful though. It has Netflix client, but picture quality is poor (compared to Roku on the same network). Then there is CinemaNow, which I never used. Amazon Video on demand looks OK. I don't have any use for Pandora, Napster, or Facebook, so I can't comment. There is also Media Player for SD and USB cards, works pretty well. I popped in an SD card from Panasonic camcorder and picture was pretty good, no conversion was necessary. And finally, there is DLNA client, which I couldn't make to work. I does find the DLNA server, but connection always fails.

(More customer reviews)I decided on this TV because of the terrific price of it offered by Amazon (compared to Crutchfield an Vanns).
The first delivery was a disaster because the panel was cracked in several places. My other 50in 2010 Samsung had the same issue with the first delivery. So be warned that Samsung is not packing these sets well given their thinness. Another bummer was the set is made in Mexico and not Japan or Korea.
However that has been it. The picture quality is superb in 2D with all sources. Even SD looks good. The speakers are not great on the set but are serviceable.
This TV loves HD sources! You will be amazed. There are four HDMI inputs.
TV is very thin with a dark grey bezel (not the 8000 titanium).
I have not tried 3D yet. Waiting for glasses to lower in price and to get a 3D Blu Ray player.
All plasmas buzz to some degree and volume level. My set buzzes when a show is paused (DVR), but can't be heard otherwise. Some buzz so loud others return is (common plasma problem) - it is a crap shoot.
Important notes:
- make sure to update the sets firmware to the latest version (1025+), this will improve the 2D and 3D.
- break in the set by running a variable signal for 25-50 hours (constantly moving images - no ESPN) this will help reduce Burn in problems
- consider updating the set to C8000 model via the service menu, you will get all the 8000 features for free (like Cinema Smooth)

When the delivery guys set it up, thye told me that in order to get
the picture that I saw in the showroom, that I had to switch out
my Direct TV receiver and dish to HD. Called Direct TV and had the HD
dish and receiver installed. Boy, what a difference. I can't get
over how great the picture is, and you can't beat the price. I played
BB against HHGregg, and they both fell over each other trying to get the sale.
It listed for $800 at both places, but I got it for $680. I've read about
buzzing noise complaints, but I have not had this problem. This is the 2010
version of this model. I'm a happy camper.

I wanted to edit this review with an update. In the past couple of weeks there has been alot of attention on the Panasonic Vierra series plasmas due to many reports of the black levels changing suddenly and getting brighter, degrading the quality of picture. While it apparently has not impacted alot of users, a small portion have noted this, enough to be concerned. You can see the original thread at Avsforums and is being discussed by the original reviewer at CNET (see link below).
While I still stand behind my review below, and I have not experienced this changing black levels, I will be monitoring it and I just wanted people reviewing this TV to know about this potentially troubling issue. Panasonic has issued a statement (in the Cnet link below)stating they auto set the darkness after a period of time to help maintain optimal picture quality over time. In this case, it appears they over compensated. It is a problem and Panasonic needs to step up with a fix.

I just got the TCP54G10. STUNNING! A little history. I have been looking at HDTVs for about 3 years, and looking at DLPs originally, then went into this year thinking LCD is the way to go. I'm glad I waited, the inverse relationship between the technology and the prices is right this year.
Before you go buy an HDTV, do yourself a favor, look at this TV, and do some research. Read other reviews. It turned me around to plasma and to this 2009 model plasma from Panasonic in particular. I knew plasmas simply have a superior picture, but I thought the price and issues with plasmas were a detriment.
I came into this dead set on an LCD, most likely from Samsung, that was before I started doing research on the latest Plasmas. Picture quality compared to an LCD, it's simply stunning, LCD has nothing on the plasmas. The Panasonic G10 is nothing short of amazing. The upconvert DVDs on this are amazing, and with our Pioneer Blu-Ray it is jaw dropping.
While I knew the picture quality on plasmas can't be beat in terms of picture quality and the ability to handle fast action in movies or sports with no problem. Versus LCD, Plasmas can handle a nearly infinite color palate so the pictures come out very natural, and you can see all the nuances of colors (like the Planet Earth series). An LCD looks, well, manufactured in terms of the picture, and can only handle so many colors.
I thought the issues of plasmas still outweighed the plusses. But they don't with the new plasmas and especially this G10 series from Panasonic. A) No Buzzing, (we live in Colorado where you would get this at higher altitudes), B) wattage, very comperable to LCDs, negligable difference between LCDs, C) price, better than LCDs. D) The glass on this sest is covered in a very resilient scratch resistant plastic screen. E) Burn in or retention of picture. No problem there with this series. F) Heat, not noticeably hotter than an LCD (this is BIG) G) It is very quiet, I can stand right next to it after an hour of watching a movie and hear no sound from the fans or anything. H) Brightness: User adjustable picture, it seems very bright, and it's antiglare coating on the screen is very good.

Oh the dirty little secret from some of my research. The other manufacturers alledgedly are getting out of plasma, why? Because Panasonic apparently owns the manufacturing plants, and they would have to pay Panasonic, or they have invested in LCD technologies elsewhere and it is thus they have greater margins for LCDs vs plasmas. Thus they can't compete on price. I've seen many reviews now where folks are going plasma vs lcd after their research.
The G10 series handles fast action with no blurriness and no flicker (LCDs have just started to get around this with 120 hz). You'll read about the 600 HZ subfield drive on this latest model and it works fantastic.
(New edit: We just hooked up an over the air digital antenna to watch our local football games, the local channel is in HD. The TV handled this just fine and even displayed it in HD with it's built in digital tuner. We saw no blurrieness in the action at all! THe picture was sharp, and crystal clear in HD.)
In terms of movies and blu-ray: This handles 24p very nicely. For 24p processing, you can choose between a 48hz mode (where you will definately notice flickering), but it defaults to 60hz, with no flickering and few "judders" that we can see, in processing 24p at 60hz.
Some reviews say "well it still doesn't handle "true cinema" 24p because the 60hz is not at the same multiple of the 24fps in which the media was filmed, and thus you won't see the film at quite the original cinematic cadence as in the theater. While this is technically true, we watch 1080p/24p from the source with 3:2 pull down off, beautifully. (Though avforums, as one of the comments to this review pointed out, has more detail on this, and probably more than you would want). Would I notice "true cinema" 24p at 96hz and like it better, not for the price difference between this and the V series (~$600-$700). Plus, for us, the very durable plastic screen on the G10 was more attractive to us versus the glass on the V10.

He has the V10, and while it is also an excellent Plasma, according to him, the differences between seeing 24p at 96hz (a multiple of 24 frames per second, allowing the original cadence of the film to be maintained) vs the 60hz processing with the G10 is not a huge difference in viewing, you are getting a stunning picture either way. (BTW, those looking at LCDs, just because an LCD can refresh at 120 hz, a multiple of 24, I have seen in AV forums that this doesn't mean the set can handle 24p at that rate. You must look at the more technical details for the 24p processing).
Suffice to say, the G10 handles blu-ray action stunningly, and 24p just fine at the 60hz. We have the Pioneer BDP-51FD BonusView Blu-ray Player plugged straight into this with the HDMI cable (which for a blu ray player is a fantastic player). No Issues. We are running straight 1080/24p from it. No flickers, no blurriness, no jaggies or artifacts that we have seen. I'm hard pressed to see any "juddering" in large pan shots either (i.e. Batman Dark Night). Stunning clarity. This plasma is nice and bright (plus you can adjust the picture in alot of areas, but perhaps not as much as some videophiles may like), and the deep blacks are stunning with little shadowing (i.e. loss of detail) that we can see. It does have a THX certified display setting, which may be too dark for many users, but this can be adjusted. You also have a custom setting where you can set the basic picture settings to your taste, which should be plenty for the average user, though again, it doesn't have some of the more detailed settings available that some videophiles may like.Bottom line, from someone who was dead set on an LCD: this turned me around to an even greater picture with plasma. For us the G10 is a stunning TV, you can't go wrong. It gets very positive reviews from all that I have read. We LOVE it. Panasonic also has great reliability history. We looked at Samsung but they looked like they had some issues with their sets that Panasonic doesn't have in the G10 series. We love the G10, and are extremely happy with our decision to wait! Both the G10 and the step up V10 are both stunning TVs, and easily in the top TVs for 2009, you won't go wrong with either of them.
On shipping from Amazon, fantastic experience. The shipper called ahead, worked out a time, TV arrived 1 day earlier than estimated, they brought the tv down to our home theatre room in our finished basement, setup the TV, put it up, plugged it in, checked it out at a high level, offered to take the packing material away. A+ service.

Having priced a few out I just did not feel it was worth the jump quite yet. Then I came across this TV on Amazon. I did a lot of research finding reviews and reading impressions from various HD forums. Finally I went to Best Buy to try this out for myself and was quite impressed.
So after much debate I picked one up with one pair of glasses since it's just me. Got a deal for $969 and that is with tax. Prior to I owned a 47inch 1080p Vizio which I've had for 3 years and was a great set for the price point as well. I can say without a shadow of doubt that even without the 3D feature the picture quality of this TV for Bluray blows away my old 1080p Vizio. Not sure how that is possible since this set is at a lower resolution but there is no fooling my eyes and what I am saying is true. The colors are vivid and the blacks are REAL black. The Vizio which was an LCD always had a white glare from back light issues of the bulbs.
Video games look fantastic. My only issue with the set is two things. My PC did look better on the Vizio because it offered a much brighter picture and on the Samsung it's not as bright. Not a deal killer but this should be noted. The other issue is with 3D games only such as Avatar, Pacific Drift 3D and MLB the show the resolution is also meh in 3D mode compared to non 3D games which look banging.
I have yet to try out a 3D movie but ordered Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and Monster House on Amazon and will edit this review to include impressions of those two true 3D movies.
The 2D-3D conversion looks fantastic on Blurays and broadcast TV so that's a win for this set.
It's like this, if you REALLY want a 3D set as I did and do not want to spend an arm and a leg as what other sets cost this is your best bet as the technology evolves and improves. If anything you will be getting a fantastic HDTV set for a fraction of what some of the other higher end sets cost and will tide you over until the technology reaches a point of 3D sans glasses which is what I am waiting for. Honestly there is very little difference between this 720p and 1080p models.

Just wanted to say that I am just in love with this TV.
One example I wanted to share is I recently got the Alien movies on Bluray and had been waiting to watch them until I had this TV in place so I could try out the 2D-3D conversion. Well I can tell you that I am on the 2nd movie Aliens and have the this feature turned on with a depth of 10 so it's peaked out and my god it looks amazing. It's almost as if the movie was filmed in 3D but I realize a lot of that has to do with the way Cameron shot the film so kudos to him for being a visionary back in 1986 because it just rocks. Especially any of the scenes in space the level of depth really brings you in when this feature is turned on. Amazing.
Still waiting on my delivery of the Blurays that are True 3D and will post impressions as soon as I get them.Edit Review day 4:
Just finished watching Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Without a doubt this TV delivers the real deal with 3D as if you are in the theater. The movie looked great in 3D. Was sharp and the 3D truly pops. I am still blown away however at the 2D-3D conversion for other Bluray movies. I also for the fun of it popped in Star Wars on DVD and yes it works great with that as well.
I just cannot praise enough about how awesome this TV is for the price point and have zero regrets about picking one up.

The TV continues to blow me away with each movie I watch in the 2D-3D conversion. The glasses were the only issue with this set. I got the free pair that came with it. What was happening was that the glasses would lose sync during scenes with high action or a lot of light. What fixed it was taking a small piece of opaque tape and placing it over the sensor on the glasses. Ever since the picture has been perfect. A small irritation that has an easy quick fix but felt I should point it out to any other owners of this set or anyone planning on getting one on how to avoid/fix the issue.

(More customer reviews)This is my 2nd Panasonic plasma display and the quality of the picture is absolutely great. This TV gets 4 stars because the display has a glossy finish and not a matte finish. This matters in any room that has windows or lamps. You'll see the reflection of these light sources on the TV screen. Honestly I have no idea why anyone would want a glossy screen over a matte screen.
This is a 720p resolution TV, which is why the price seems low for a 50 inch TV. 1080p sounds great but in reality most folks are not watching _true_ 1080p content. Even with a lot of bluray content, the original content was a lower resolution (often DVD 480p) and it was simply rescanned into 1080p for the bluray disk. If you really want a 1080p TV, go for it of course. There is some true 1080p content out there and it looks great if you have a 1080p TV.
