I purchased this BluRay player this morning at a local retail store. The price was reasonable and it had the Phillips name. At first I thought it may have been a Funai with Phillips branding, but after a little net research I have found it is an authentic Phillips manufactured BluRay player.
The player itself is smaller than the cheaper boxes by about 25%, which is nice as it fits snugly on my dresser with my flat screen HDTV. Out of box setup was a piece of cake, startup and BluRay setup was simple. Speaking of startup, it's quite sprightly, taking about 5 seconds to go from power on to BluRay ready mode. In other words, I can hit the power, take a BluRay disc from the case (in this instance it's "Wall-E"), and it's ready to go right in the tray. After that it's 2, maybe 3 seconds and we're off! I was impressed by it's response time right off the bat.
Now, as to the quality. Wow. BluRay really opens up the world of high definition and takes it to a totally different level. Before this player I had a DVD upconverter, and it looked fairly good on my HDTV. It of course plays at 1080p, but is perfect for any HDTV whether it be 720 or 1080. So back to the movie I used as an example: "Wall-E" on BluRay and in this player, was enough to take my breath away. Gorgeous colors, clear, crisp image and sharp, precision audio. To say I was impressed is an understatement.Everything just flowed together beautifully.
I removed Wall-E from the player and grabbed my "Finding Nemo" DVD. I wanted to see what it could do for regular DVDs. I put the disc in the drive and waited a few moments, and when the menu popped up, I was surprised. The quality was excellent. Obviously not BluRay quality, but far superior to my old DVD upconverter. Richer colors, great looking picture.
So, to sum it up:
* Smaller design than cheaper models
* Easy Setup
* Quick Startup and Load times
* Incredible picture quality
* Plays DVDs with far superior quality to DVD Upconverter
I give it 5 out of 5 stars, with a wholehearted recommendation.
This Phillips BluRay player gives you the most bang for your buck.~J.W.

Denon DVDA1UDCI Blu-ray/DVD/CD Player (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I had very high hopes for this machine when I purchased it from a local Denon dealer with cash I had been given as a gift. I have some SACD's and DVD audio discs, a huge collection of DVD's and CD's, and was ready to begin a collection of Blu-ray discs. I am running the player connected to a Denon AVR 4310CI receiver with which I am greatly pleased. When the player works, the sound and picture are outstanding.
I have been tremendously disappointed from the onset.
The machine has been thoroughly updated in its firmware and is still picky about playing and not playing certain Blu-rays as well as even CD's. It was suggested that maybe this was because its firmware was not properly updated.
To update the player, one is supposed to be able to easily access online through its ethernet connection the Denon site that downloads these things. However, the player will not stay connected to the internet long enough to complete the downloads. I have Cat 7 cables, and the fastest "business" speed internet connection that Comcast provides. It has been tested and has been shown to be reliable and steady. To assist me in this, the local dealer from which I purchased the player actually made a couple of discs to use to load the firmware updates into the machine. Their tech came to my home and accomplished this procedure. The player indicates that it is up to date now, indicating "latest" when firmware update is checked. It still will not connect and play "Blu-ray Live" options that are available on many discs. It still will not consistently play the Ironman Blu-ray disc. At least one audio CD I own will not play in the machine. I have checked these discs by taking them to try on various other players and even back to the dealer's shop to try on their players. All but one music Blu-ray disc (defective) have played flawlessly elsewhere.
As has been noted in another review, the player is very slow starting up even if it is set in "quick start" mode.
The owner's manual is hopelessly useless in assisting in use of the player. The GUI is "pretty," but very difficult to understand- even for the tech from the local dealer!
Finally, since hooking the new receiver and this Blu-ray player into my system, I have encountered a repeated problem with my Dell plasma TV (5 years old) flashing pink or having a constant pink background on it when starting up or changing from cable to Blu-ray, or from cable to the Rhapsody music source online through the receiver's ethernet connection. No one has been able to tell me how to fix that problem! I can't say that the Blu-ray player has caused this, but it never happened before I installed the new player into my system. Denon has been no help and the local dealer has no idea how to fix this TV problem. Dell's customer service suggested that I buy a new TV to fix it!
Over all, the decision to purchase this Blu-ray player has been a very expensive mistake. I would recommend that anyone considering it try a cheaper Samsung with the ability to connect wirelessly to the internet to access Netflix, Pandora, and other online services.

Magnavox Mdv2100/f7 Dvd Player W/progessive Scan Zoom Slow Motion Search Review

(More customer reviews)I had an older Magnavox DVD player that lasted for years. I replaced it with a Best Buy brand, and that lasted about a year. I saw this Magnavox model in a Meijer store and the price was right. I realized that I wasn't getting the Cadillac of DVD players for $30, but there should be some minimum expectations. It lasted a few months and then started to periodically lose color. I had to turn the machine off and then on to reset it. I had already gotten another for a spare TV, so I returned the first one and switched to the second. It's still working, but makes some funny noises. Hasn't been used enough to tell yet. In the meantime, a third player was purchased for the basement. It won't play right from the beginning. Will play some DVD's but not others, even though its twin will play all of the former. It too will be returned.
I expect the last one to go soon. A player or any product should be inexpensive because it lacks certain features, not because of poor quality. Yet I expect if I call the store to complain (or even Magnavox), there'll just be a shrug and comment "What do you expect of a $30 DVD player?" Let's say I expect a lot more than this. And perhaps some compensation from the manufacturer for my time, expense, and frustration.
When will people actually care enough about what they buy to consider boycotting corporations which insult the consumer with their shoddy products? Right now, it still seems to be . . . shrug and toss!

P&F BDP5506/F7 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player - Black Review

(More customer reviews)I bought one of these from Wal-Mart because of the ability to access the internet with your PC through the MediaConnect feature but was unable to download the required software from Philips' site or get any tech support who could help or understand what the issue might be with the Philips site.
The instructions tell you to enter a code found on a CD with the player. There is no CD. The set-up menu tells you to go to [...] and enter a code you can find on the player's set-up screen.
I tried this multiple times on multiple browsers on multiple computers and kept getting this message:
"Wi-Fi MediaConnect has encountered an internal error. Sorry for any inconvenience. Please try again later."
No luck with either phone, chat or e-mail support.
I can't fathom why such a large international company can operate this way.
I'm done and will return the player.

I had bought so many in the past 2 years, trying to find one that could be made into a region free player to play my DVDs from Japan, United Kingdom and Germany. This player is able to be made region free (check videohelp.com for Philips DVP3962) in a few short seconds! I'm so happy now that I don't have to keep pulling out my portable player to play my non-region 1 DVDs!

(More customer reviews)I just received this DVD player tonight after struggling with a crappy Panasonic S-58 I purchased locally based on a few enthusiastic, albeit ill-conceived, reviews I came across on Amazon and elsewhere. I can't tell you how happy I am with this unit and the myriad ways in which it excels both my previous Phillips 3962 (rendered it useless due to a sticky rental from Netflix)and the previously mentioned Panasonic model (of sorry memory), but I'll make a feeble attempt by way of this brief review nonetheless:
Image quality: The Phillips wins hands down here, offering what appears to my eyes at least to provide a level of picture quality (out of the box with ZERO adjustments) comparable to high-end units commanding upwards of three times the price. The Panasonic, in contradistinction, offered a level of image quality that I judged to be,at best, mediocre, or what a more discerning home theater electronics fancier would refer to as "terrible". It would indeed be no exaggeration to describe the difference as dramatic and eye-catching. The upscaling to 1080i of my Samsung LCD is simply phenomenal. I can't even imagine how good the image would be with 1080P compatible TV models.
Features: This DVD player has every feature you need and even some features you don't need. For those of you with DIVx-laden flash drives, fear not, as this unit provides front connecting USB facilities that effortlessly transport the tech- savvy votary of cutting-edge home theater to DIVx heaven with the the simple plugging of a cord.
Price: Cheap and good. This is true of so few things in life. For all those currently vacillating between "cheap dvd players", I would advise you to not look a gift-horse in the mouth when considering this unit. Don't even think twice before hitting the purchase button and certainly don't wast your time and tire your poor eyes "researching" any longer. This is, unequivocally, the HOLY GRAIL of cheap DVD players. So save yourself some time and money and just hit the purchase button.
Accessories: For all those here endlessly kvetching about the "flimsy" remote, I beg to differ. The remote is actually very elegant and well constructed for a player in this price class. You want to see a cheap remote? Buy the Panasonic S-58 and be prepared to cringe as the dollar-store quality Chinese toy-like polyethylene plastic tenses and creaks helplessly under the pressure of your child's feeble grip. In any event, this complaint amounts to nothing more than the most minor of quibbles considering the superlative features and quality of the player itself. For my part, however, I stand by my judgement that the remote is just dandy.
In closing, I would like to thank Phillips for manufacturing this superb product and for providing it to the public at such a modest cost. In doing so, they are affording the non-enthusiast public a viewing experience whose value far outstrips the mere pittance for which it is exchanged, and which will only serve to further consolidate Phillips unshakable position as the leader in home entertainment electronics for years to come.
And, as always, Amazon.com is peerless in their prompt, worry-free delivery of new products.
Both, therefore, win my unqualified and unreserved endorsement. FIVE STARS!

Philips BDP7310/F7 Blu-ray Disc Player Review

(More customer reviews)I recently returned this item as I experienced issues of freezing and unable to play AVCHD files. I was watching Planet Earth and suddenly the picture froze. After a while, it skipped to the next scene and there was no voice. After forwarding for sometime, Voice came back. The freezing issues happened while watching the movie X-Men too.
I tried playing the HD videos recorded on my Sony camcorder and got an error message that the Format is not supported. I tried playing it both by copying the recorded clips on to a DVD and on to a SD Card. Also, tried playing a clip that I downloaded from the internet with no luck.
Also, the device does not play Video CDs. I have a few of the old ones and I don't want to have two players, one to play certain type of files and other for the rest. I tried the above after upgrading to the latest firmware. (Upgrade was a breeze) I will wait for Philips to fix the issues before I buy the player.
