Syba USB 3.0 External Aluminum Enclosure for SATA II 5.25-Inch Optical Drive or 3.5-Inch HDD SY-ENC55004 Review

I've had this enclosure running a Hitachi 2TB drive for two weeks now. The drive is extremely cool -- you'd never know there was a HDD inside! But this is due to a really noisy fan. The fan really pulls the air through, but resonates with the case. I have the enclosure resting on a piece of foam on the carpet, but the noise still drives us nuts. I have to hold the case in my hand to get it to quiet down.

ASUS USB 2.0 Slim External 6x Blu-Ray Writer SBW-06C1S-U/DBLU/G/ACI/AS Review

ASUS USB 2.0 Slim External 6x Blu-Ray Writer SBW-06C1S-U/DBLU/G/ACI/AS

The Asus DVD Writer is just that. It will not play retail/movie Blu_Ray discs without additional software.
This stunned me when I made the discovery. Took for granted the Asus DVD Blu-Ray Writer would play Blu-Ray movies native.
You have to have additional software to play retail/movie Blu-ray discs. Luckily, I do have additional Blu-Ray player software. If I did not have the additional software I would have returned the Asus SBW-06C1S-U for a complete refund feeling raped.
The Asus Blu-Ray Writer does burn Blu-Ray discs. Did a test batch of about 22 GBs worth of data with perfect results.
The burned Blu-Ray disc worked fine in my native Windows 7 Blu-Ray player laptop. For you Linux people, the burned Blu-Ray
disc worked fine in Ubuntu 10.04 (am sure in all flavors too). Linux can not play Blu-Ray retail movies for now. Am sure they will have a Blu-Ray player application in the near future. Dual boot with Windows 7.
The speed is good. The fastest Blu-Ray discs are 4 times (I believe). This writer is 6 times. Burned the 22 Gbs in about an hour.
Asus not providing software for a Blu-Ray player is an outrage.
There is a $20.00 rebate with this model. The coupon is downloadable from amazon.com.
Am keeping it. Asus is running a con with this SBW-06C1S-U
One more thing, if you do not have two USB ports right next to each other with a week processor you will not be able to use the Asus Writer unless you use a USB hub that Asus states may not work with this model. My processor is a quad array
with USB ports farther away than the USB cords length. I need but one port to power the Asus Writer. How stupid is Asus?

Bluray Player External USB Laptop Cd/dvdrw Burner Review

Bluray Player External USB Laptop Cd/dvdrw Burner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was planning to play Blu Ray movies with this drive. I couldn't care less about the DVD burning feature, I was only looking at playing movies. First (and as is normal with other drives) you need to buy a software player, so plan on spending %59 to $100 for a blu ray software player such as WinDVD, PowerDVD or MediaTheater. Second, and this was the hard part, the drive didn't came with the latest firmware, and the Phillips reference did not help at all.
1) This drive doesn't state what brand it is
2) You will not be able to find references in Google that point to a firmware update
3) No reviews or places to learn about the firmware issues for this model
Anyway, it's a Lite On drive, and while the drive is not listed there's an utility that is able to detect the drive, check for the latest firmware, update the firmware automatically (and check for upgrades from time to time)[...]
If I didn't find the firmware, I'd have rated it at two stars, for being able to read and burn DVD and one extra for being able to work with data blu ray disks. As it is now, it works flawlessly, yet it's 4 stars for the immense hassle that was finding and updating the firmware. Beware, under Windows 7, when you first run the program, it will not work. But if you close the program, Windows 7 will detect it did not install correctly, and do some changes. The next time you run the SmartPack, it will work and actually upgrade the firmware (at your own risk).

Verbatim 97335 50 GB 6x Blu-ray Double Layer Recordable Disc BD-R DL, 10-Disc Spindle Review

Verbatim 97335 50 GB 6x Blu-ray Double Layer Recordable Disc BD-R DL, 10-Disc Spindle
Average Reviews:

This is an excellent product and the prices are getting low enough that start making competitive with the HD drives, however right now the DL 50 gig discs are still expensive, price per gig is up there, from 25 to 30 cents per gig..the price should be about 8 to 11 cents to really be worth while and I am sure in a short time that will be the case.
Now for the criticism levied that its takes "3 hrs to burn and verify " a 50 gig disc... yeah if you use Windows XP and have a Dual core or single core cpu .
However if you do have an AMD or INTEL 6 core, your burn and verify times will be under an hour, this is using Neros latest Nero 10.
Bottom line, burn time is contingent on the power of your computer, the health of your software environment and the quality of burner you use.
Now the real issue is how to properly catalog and organize the filing system.
If you want to archive your entire iTunes or music library on one disc, or if you scan film or have huge media files, this is the way to go.
Very clean burn and excellent fidelity.
Highly recommended!!!

Velocity Micro VMdrive Pro Slot Loading External DVD Burner (Black) Review

Velocity Micro VMdrive Pro Slot Loading External DVD Burner (Black)

Very cheap feeling plastic case, poorly constructed unit was dead on arrival. Any disk inserted was immediately ejected by the unit. Software package is junk, lame no-name app to write files to disk, windows can do that without any help at all ... I returned the unit and will look for another brand name model. This is one to avoid in my opinion.

Apple Macbook Air SuperDrive (MB397G/A) Review

Apple Macbook Air SuperDrive (MB397G/A)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The MacBook Air SuperDrive is light and compact as advertised. It slides into a bag pocket and hardly adds any weight or bulk. And it performs as advertised, quickly and quietly.
But, it consumes the MacBook Air's only USB port and works only with that one port -- it does not work with USB hubs! With no downstream ports of its own, you can't use your SuperDrive and any other USB device at the same time. Like a keyboard or mouse, or your iPhone or iPod, or a USB printer.
This is a remarkable oversight. But if you want to install Boot Camp or play DVDs, you'll need this -- or something like it.
(In my original review on 2/10/2008, I wrote "it's pretty much the only game in town right now." But since then, some commenters noted that generic USB optical drives will work, such as the LG GSA-E50L. Thanks to C. Ross and PenPal for chiming in! I haven't tested the LG or any other USB DVD drive sold on Amazon with the MacBook Air, so I can't attest to how well they do or don't work with MacBook Air.)

The Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive is the perfect complement for the new, sleek MacBook Air. You can read and write CDs and DVDs, and it is perfect for watching a DVD movie, installing software, backing up your data, and more.
Burn and Play CDs and DVDs The new Apple MacBook Air is thin and beautiful, and is able to do tricks such as borrow the optical drive of another computer on a network. But sometimes you need an optical drive on the go, and that's where the Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive comes in. Made by Apple with a design to complement the MacBook Air perfectly, the MacBook Air SuperDrive connects to your MacBook Air with a built-in USB cable you'll never lose. No extra power adapters are needed, as the SuperDrive simply draws power from the USB connection itself, regardless of whether or not your MacBook Air is plugged in.
The SuperDrive features speedy performance, writing DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL discs at up to 4x speed, and DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, and DVD+RW discs at up to 8x speed.
Small Size for Easy Portability The MacBook Air SuperDrive employs a slot-loading design that makes it miniscule--barely larger than a CD case. You can easily drop the MacBook Air SuperDrive into your bag and take it everywhere you go. Now you can enjoy a DVD movie while on the plane or you can burn onto a CD that song you've been working on while you were on the tour bus.
What's in the Box MacBook Air SuperDrive with attached USB cable, user's guide.

Average Reviews:

I purchased this hoping it would be a good add-on to my Mac mini... not to PLAY Blu-ray discs, but to RIP them to MKV files (using MakeMKV). Fortunately, it works great!
Not only is the setup crazy stupid easy (one Y-cable... two USB into the mini, one mini-USB into the drive), but there's no software to begin using it; the drive is recognized instantly and you can begin reading discs.
Again, this is NOT for watching movies directly from the Blu-ray disc on your Mac -- Blu-ray is still a "bag of hurt" according Jobs, so until Apple builds that into the OS, it'll be a short ride.
But if you want to rip the Blu-Ray to your Mac (and use MakeMKV or AirVideo to watch/convert), it works fabulously.

I purchased this unit and always had problems burning BluRay Discs. It periodically locks up and must be power cycled. LG has a LiveChat which has been taken down and they do not respond to emails in any timely fashion (I've been waiting two days). In speaking with the telephone support I discovered that their only escalation is by internal email which takes 24-48 hours. They don't have ticket numbers so when you call back be prepared to go through the same info again and again. I'm not surprised that they are hiding. With junk like they produce their technical staff must be overwhelmed. Caveat Emptor. Buyer beware.

LG GP08LU10 8x DVD±RW Slim Super Multi Drive with LightScribe Review

LG GP08LU10 8x DVD±RW Slim Super Multi Drive with LightScribe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this drive specifically for use with one of my Windows-based pcs. It works great with that, which I expected, and the windows software that comes with the drive is also wonderful and most welcome.
I did not, however, expect that it would work with my Macbook 1.83 gHz Core2 Duo. My internal optical drive is dying, and while it's pretty easy to use a network drive for installs and stuff, it's definitely not as convenient to go back and forth to the other desk. The documentation and all but one of the reviews were pretty clear that this was not a Mac-friendly product, so I was pleasantly surprised when the Mighty MacBook jumped right on playing the music cd in the drive.
I was even MORE surprised when it burned a DVD under the native/finder/disk burning application (no third party software involved at all).
And I was elated to learn that LightScribe had free downloads for the Mac, but I didn't really expect them to work in Snow Leopard.
But they do. AND it plays movies in the DVD player software. I don't know for certain whether my version of dvd player is the one that shipped with my macbook, or whether it's something that was bundled with my snow leopard disk, but movies open right up - impressively fast, as a matter of fact.
